About the Company :
Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation has been involved in the generation and transmission of electricity since 1897. Unlike various other companies which are involved either only in the transmission or production of electricity C.E.S.C deals efficiently with both the sectors. It is the first thermal power generation company , not only in west Bengal but in India. CESC uses thermal power plants for the generation of electricity .
The company is a century old and has brought electric supply to the country when Kolkata was the capital of the India .It started with an initial area of 14.44 sq.km. Initially electricity was used only to remove darkness .Over the years it has found its application in various spheres .Lanterns got removed by tube lights , ceiling fans were running in every household and even metro railway and tram service were introduced. Initially the company was under the British Government and in 1989 it has become a part of RPG (Rama Prasad Goenka ) group.
The company has brought electric supply to the country within 10 years after it has come in London .In terms of an Indian company it is a great achievement , when the company was in its initial stages the company employees would go to London to have their training and the company even had a head office there named Victoria house as it has in Kolkata .
C.E.S.C , one of the few private power utilities, has grown to a generating capacity of about 1000 MW across four thermal power plants. C.E.S.C is a vertically integrated Power Company and its operation encompasses coal mining, generation and distribution of Power. Today, the Company serves 15 million people spread over its licensed area of 567 sq. km in the twin cities of Kolkata and Howrah in the State of West Bengal, India. Poised for large growth in demand, CESC is setting up a number of power stations in the country.
From its first tiny DC station at Emambaugh Lane operating from April of 1899, CESC has moved from strength to strength. Its latest station, Budge Budge, with a capacity of 500 MW, is the largest ever private industrial investment in West Bengal. CESC is one of the major private sector organisations in India with an annual turnover of Rs.17 billion in 1998-99. C.E.S.C is part of the RPG Group which has a strong presence in the fields of power generation, transmission network, cable manufacturing and consultancy in the operation and maintenance of power plants. The group has strategic tie-ups with a number of Fortune 500 companies .
The various Power Generating Stations :
The company has it’s own four (4) power generating stations or power plants .C.E.S.C uses thermal power plant , based on coal as the fuel and the steam thus produced drives the turbine to create electrical power. CESC has a generation capacity of 1065 MW. Apart from Budge Budge, there are two other pulverised fuel stations - Titagarh with 240 MW capacity and Southern at 130 MW. All the new stations use latest control and environment protection systems. The Company has two vintage stations - Mulajore at 60 MW and New Cossipore at 130 MW, both over 50 years old. They are still generating satisfactorily through proper upkeep. To take care of the growing needs of the city in the early part of the next millennium, another 500 MW thermal power station is being promoted. The company needs another 950 MW of supply which it imports from various other sources.

Operating Efficiency :
Operating efficiency of CESC's power stations is amongst the highest in the country. Alive to its environmental responsibilities, its generating stations at Budge Budge, Titagarh and Southern have all attained 'zero effluent' environment friendly status. Budge Budge is also the first thermal power station in the world to have qualified for carbon credits under United Nations Frameworks Convention on climate Change. The Company has demonstrated notable success in controlling distribution losses.
Distribution Network :
In addition to generation, CESC has the responsibility of distributing power to the entire population of 14 million in the metropolitan area of Calcutta/Howrah, for which it has to maintain a large distribution network. The distribution system is healthy and reliable - investments are made on an ongoing basis to maintain the network. Over Rs. 5 billion has been invested in the past five years on the network alone. The network includes submarine cables as also cables laid through a tunnel under the River Hooghly completed in 1931, which was a technological wonder of its time. The tunnel links the Southern Generating Station on the east bank of the River to the Botanical Gardens on the west bank. It is a 690 yard tunnel, 6 feet in diameter and 90 feet below ground level, transferring power in bulk from WBSEB and DVC.
