IIT Roorkee has a very rich history, The college was established in year 1847 as the first engineering college of the British Empire in India. The College was renamed ad the Thomason College of Civil Engineering in 1854. Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, presented the Charter in November 1949, elevating the erstwhile college to the first Engineering University of Independent India. Since its established, the University has played a vital role in providing the technical manpower, know-how and pursuit of research to the country. In 2001, Government of India gave University of Roorkee the status of Indian Institute of Technology. Currently, IIT Roorkee ranks amongst the top 5 engineering colleges in India.
The Saharanpur Campus of IIT Roorkee was established in 1964 as Institute of paper Technology in collaboration with the Royal Swedish Government and was merged with the University of Roorkee in 1978 now IIT Roorkee.
