The WAVES Debate
A wise man once said, "My life is
my argument".
This competition, a tapestry of argument,
reasoning and persuasion, is a classic
masterpiece. It draws massive audiences
and participants all the same, every
year. It is witness to some of the
best in-house and national debaters
who battle it out in a riveting exhibition
of logic, eloquence and passion alike.
Participation is as always, unlimited
and in teams of two. The first round
will consist of Round table debates
with each member of each team necessarily
taking opposite stands on the same
issue. Apart from ensuring equality
at the preliminary stages of the contest,
it truly tests a team’s ability
to play from either position with
equal ease. The subsequent round will
see teams debating a crisis from assigned
lobby positions. This round assesses
a team’s insight into not only
the significance of the issue at hand
but also its scope, implication and
consequence of a solution, if any.
The four best teams who make it through
these gruelling, yet challenging rounds
will participate in the finals of
the WAVES Debate, held in the British
Parliamentary style. One of the most
constructive and analytical forms
of debating, it is the accepted format
of debating worldwide
The consistency in judgement and the
subtle, strategic presentation of
argument is sure to leave you enthralled.
FASHION PARADE
Truly an event that captures the creativity,
colour and the sheer excitement that
has come to define waves over the
years, the fashion parade is an impressive
sight to behold. Participants strut
their latest creations on the ramp,
in front of a packed audience as both
noise and adrenalin levels soar through
the roof. The theme-based displays
captivate one and all as the stunning
interplay of colours and the eclectic
combinations of styles dazzle the
masses. The essence of the event lies
in its ability to exhibit some of
the most stunning works of fashion
transcending timelines and cultures,
all the while exuding a contemporary
vibe to the whole performance. And
the well-orchestrated use of background
music adds another dimension to the
event, one that subtly reflects the
mood of the display. And this year,
featuring themes such as
Ocean hues, Vintage, and Incredible
India, the fashion parade
promises to be a feast for the eyes
yet again.
The event is divided into two rounds,
an elimination round and a final round.
Teams are required to submit a copy
of their event write-ups and bring
2 CDs containing their music tracks.
Emphasis will be given to clothing,
portrayal and originality, so think
outside the box. Optionally, a projector
screen will be present as a backdrop
which can be used if required. The
performances are required to be conducted
within 15 minutes between curtains,
failing which, points will be deducted.
Thus, this is an event for those who
have that little bit of oomph and
that tiny spark of creativity that
can set a stage alight.
All in all, the glitz, the glamour,
the flashing lights and the deafening
noise levels make the Fashion Parade
a riveting show and one of Waves'
most memorable nights.
Hamaari Awaaz Suno (Street
Play)
WAVES - Winter 2009 will be host to
a myriad of challenging and engaging
events. An embodiment of this spirit
of competition is the Street Play
event, named Hamaari Awaaz Suno. A
common theme binds together the event-
a social message, and hence the name.
The objective of the event is not
only to provide a platform for showcasing
talent in the departments of acting,
directing and script writing, but
also to drive home a subtle point;
to serve as a reminder of what we
as a society have often forgotten
or trodden upon. Because sometimes,
actions speak louder with words.
The maximum number of participants
for this event has been kept at 12,
with a maximum of one entry per college.
Each play is expected to last for
about 15 to 20 minutes. The use of
props is allowed, but with a ceiling
of 10 different kinds. There is no
limit, however, to how creative one
can get, and therein lies the beauty
of this event- the freedom to choose
any path one may desire, but making
sure it leads to the same destination:
the social message.
INDIAN ROCK
Among all forms of art, music is a medium that can effortlessly put forth an idea which cannot be put into words but at the same time wants its voice to be heard in today's social and cultural milieu.
In India, with the growing popularity of Western Rock music among today's youth, Rock music, too, has been imbibed into the cultural mosaic. India, too, has learned to rhyme with the changing times in the new world, giving rise to a new genre - a blend of Indian music and rock.
In keeping with this trend, WAVES Winter 2009 introduces INDIAN ROCK, a new event that beckons creativity which juxtaposes lyrics in Indian languages with the usual Rock paraphernalia.
The maximum number of entries per college has been kept as one, with the maximum number of participants being 7. A minimum of one vocal and one percussion instrument is compulsory for each team.
As regards to creativity, the sky is the limit. Participants can play music based on a theme of their choice. The competition heats up as participants are expected to play a different song in the final round, in case they qualify. The stakes are high with the coveted prize including 150 hours of free recording time with Xion Labs.
