Exactly.. This happens! Aptitude is basic, it might be cleared. When it comes to GD there are various aspects by which the candidate/(s) are measured. Lemme first list the main knock points in GD 1) Communication skill This includes ur speaking and delivery. Your gestures too add in. Flawless language can give a good impression. 2) Dress Code 3) Attitude 4) Delivery skills 5)Body Language- Eye contact- posture-gestures 6) Cohesiveness 7) Empathetical listening. 8) Leadership skills 9) Motivation. 10) Takin the discussion forward and keeping it on the trak. 11) Speak & Agree concept 12) Making consensus. 13) Summarzing/ concludin.

Wow Suresh! Some of the points you have mentioned are excllent! I would like to add that one of the most important points for judgement criteria of a GD is the content! If you can bring your own thoughts and ideas to the discussion and support them with additional points including statistics, etc, it certainly proves that you are knowledgeable and that you stay up to date. For eg, if a topic like "Providing equal opportunities for women" is discussed, you can take your own position and if you can provide some statistics that x% of the women are not working because of family pressure or any other statistic, it proves that you have taken a stand and are also aware of what is currently happening. I think this also applies.

A GD is just a 10 or 20 minute exercise and in my personal opinion not the best tools to consider a persons competence. But still, its an easy way to judge and hence, its followed in most placement drives or admission procedures. I think, like most other cases, preparation of a GD starts right from when you are born. Its about your opinions and ideas. The best way to start preparation to keep yourselves up to date about current affairs and also develop the skill of thinking and developing your own perspective about anything around you. Communication skills is also important as in a GD, you will have to voice your opinion and ensure that it is heard and understood by all the other participants. This does not call for having a great command over language, but the ability to express your thoughts in a simple and clear manner. You should also be a good listener. Listen to other participants and appreciate them if they have talked sense and then put your own opinion.

and also use simple and understandable words ... dont divert the discussion into a argument ..be polite and clear about your point.

Great thread :) Its not necessary that speaker should always be on the side where there the poll is high. You may speak against but the way you say matters. It shouldnt be strong and abusive. Yes as Site-admin suggested the knowledge is very important. Its better to say what you know. Posing yourself too much when you are not steady on the subject will be a drawback.

Voice: When you say it, say it loud and clear. Remember each individual sitting in the group is a competitor of yours. He has no need to sit and pay attention to a soft/ uncanny voice. MUST : Always carry a pen and small paper or a notepad when you sit for a GD. Its shows you are prepared! Know ths : The one who initiates gets highest point ! No.. Yes initiation is considered but it doesnt mean it score max. Try initiating if you are confidant, introduced to the group and if you have a cloud cover of your topic. You can always motivate the shy people to speak. Its not your duty but it shows you have the sign of a leader in you. Spring up to various sub-topics, analyse various areas in ur topic. You'll get more points..

I m sure there is a lot that can be said for a GD.. Now for the Interview. As far as PIs are considered its "your show". Everything is in your hands and there is nothing the interlocutor has to do about it. Take it at ease... 1) Do your homework 2) Prepare for questions regarding your project/ ur area of interest. 3) Know the industry stds 4)Let ur resume do the talk- prep to ur best. 4)be prepared for questions y u hav to join the company 5)Have patience 6) Talk your heart out... The job is urs...

Many sit silently durin a GD.Its d lack of confidence that keeps them mum.. Confidence is a very important thing..If they can understand that u r confident enough to do whatever they giv that would b an added advantage..

@srinithya : Yes . I m glad you asked it.It doesnt require intense prep but reading newspapers(english esp. Hindu,Deccan,Indian Exp) helps, check ibnlive or online news so that you can get view of problems and ways ppl think, enter into small gossips with your friends reg general issues.. eg: kasab's sentence . so get to know how others react and think regarding the issue. This is for content gaining. Other than that before attending GD, on the previous day get a check list from a forum/topic and take care u do it. Eg: good grooming, dress code, your body language, gestures. Imp thing: Learn to listen and respond actively without breakin the flow abrubtly.

For interviews... Self preparation and a lot of homework is essential. You must know yourself and be urself! Knw ur strengths and weakness, talents, skills. The way you present yourself matters a lot!

Sometimes inspite of being prepared we may encounter topics which are greek and latin to us!!but dont panic...keep ur head calm.Never try to initiate the topic at such times.Hold on and listen to the various views put forward by others. condense it and then use your wit to put up your point.Be confidant and sensible doing this. And always be prepared to confront any topic.Learn it there and replay it your own way.

I have been in the situation where I had seriously no idea about the topic which was given to us. It was in Latin. btwn newspapers are good source of knowledge about current affairs, beside it I would suggest Pratiyogita Darpan magazine published by government of India monthly. It contains most important events (national/international) of the month briefly. It also has discussion and debate topics which may help us in GD. apart from this there are quizes on various subjects and few think tank articles.

For people who are scared of Facing GD...a tip from my side, Make sure your diction is clear, use a simple language and make use of good words when needed. Please do not get vociferous while you are in a GD. Attitude matters a lot,Dress Code: Formals ,Eye contact with every1 around. Don not interrupt while others are speaking and make it a debate session. I guess this should be of some help to the freshers who are going to face GD's. All the best. will come with more tips.

in gd i would suggest always be the first or may be the second one to speak... n remain stick to ur point... dont get convinced by other.. rather make others to get convinced by your point without any aggression.. like do not point finger on others, dont beat on the table... proper gestures n eyes contact... show ur personality as a group leader or a pacifier( one who calms down a situation).
