University of Central Missouri Foundation, conducts Suzanne Foster Scholarship In Library Science

The Suzanne Foster Scholarship in Library Science is available through the University of Central Missouri Foundation for a graduate student pursuing a degree in library science at UCM. This scholarship is made possible by way of gifts from family, friends and royalties earned from the sale of the University of Central Missouri (UCM) General Education course LIS 1600 University Library & Research Skills textbook: Information Literacy for Undergraduates by Sandra Jenkins, UCM faculty member.

Background : Suzanne was born May 9, 1951, in Kirksville, MO. She was the daughter of Clifford and Bobbie Lear. On Oct. 16, 1977, she married Gregg M. Foster. She was a 1969 Marshall High School graduate and attended Missouri Valley College in Marshall and State Fair Community College in Sedalia. She obtained a bachelor of science degree from the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg in May 1989. In 1980, she opened the Red Hots Dance Studio, where she taught for 16 years. She also taught English, speech and theatre in Missouri public schools for 14 years. Suzanne was a lifelong learner and believed in self-reliance. She enjoyed the company of young people and did everything she could to help them be successful. Education, both formal and informal, was important to her. Suzanne understood the power of creativity and innovation in education. She would be very supportive of the goals of this scholarship as it strives to encourage students to think beyond the confines of one class assignment and instead, enhance the whole of their learning experience. She also had respect for the mission and vision of school librarians. Suzanne understood that teachers and librarians are partners in education. She would be pleased that this scholarship recognizes school librarians and the important work that they do in the areas of information literacy, student transition to college, technology innovation and teacher/librarian collaboration.
