CAT 2010 online exam begins today

Today is the first day of the Common Admission Test (CAT) Exam online for the academic year 2010-11. The CAT exam, held annually for admissions into the prestigious Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and 150 other business schools across India, evolved from being a paper-pencil test to an online one in 2009.

CAT 2010 will therefore be the second edition of the online exams, and a litmus test for Prometric, the agency which conducts the test that faced severe criticism over the trouble-marred 2009 CAT.

Prometric, the agency which conducts this entrance examination, and the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), hope everything will go smoothly during the second year of the online test.

The test will be conducted online in about 78 centres across 33 cities. Forty different sets of question papers have been prepared for the test that ends on Nov 24.

According to a press release from Prometric, " The registration and scheduling window opened on August 30 and thousands of candidates have since then scheduled their tests successfully.Intensive training is provided to all test centres' staff who will also undergo a certification programme so that they are more equipped to assist candidates."

Prometric has created and released a series of short videos to familiarize candidates with the registration and scheduling process, test day procedures and scoring methods of CAT 2010. A practice test has also been released to give them sufficient time before the actual test to help them get familiar with the navigation and functionality of CAT. "Sample questions provided in the practice test will not be representative of the content or difficulty level of the actual test," the release stated.

CAT 2010 convener Himanshu Rai told TOI that this year they have retained venues with good infrastructure. "There are some logical breaks and forced breaks like festivals in between the testing period. Barring that, students will have 20 days of testing period," he said. He added that all the systems have been tested to ensure that there will not be any virus attacks.

The results of CAT-2010 is slated to be declared on Jan 12.
