Seminars - Projects
A
seminar is, generally, a form of academic
instruction, either at a university or offered by a commercial or
professional organization. It has the function of bringing together small
groups for recurring meetings, focusing each time on some particular
subject, in which everyone present is requested to actively participate.
This is often accomplished through an ongoing Socratic dialogue with a
seminar leader or instructor, or through a more formal presentation of
research. Normally, participants must not be beginners in the field under
discussion (at a university, seminar classes are generally reserved for
upper-year students). The idea behind the seminar system is to familiarise
students more extensively with the methodology of their chosen subject and
also to allow them to interact with examples of the practical problems that
always crop up during research work. It is essentially a place where
assigned readings are discussed, questions can be raised and debates
conducted. It is relatively informal, at least compared to the lecture
system of academic instruction.

The word
Project comes from the
Latin word projectum from projicere, "to throw something
forwards" which in turn comes from pro-, which denotes something
that precedes the action of the next part of the word in time (paralleling the
Greek πρό) and jacere, "to throw". The word
"project" thus actually originally meant "something that comes
before anything else is done". When the word was initially adopted, it
referred to a plan of something, not to the act of actually carrying this plan
out. Something performed in accordance with a project was called an object.
This use of "project" changed in the 1950s when several techniques
for project management were introduced: with this advent the word slightly
changed meaning to cover both projects and objects. However in certain
projects there may still exist so called objects and object ,
reflecting the older use of the words.
