| The Next Wonders of the World?
|
For all those who have high-powered and high-performance cars coming first to mind when thinking about the greatest engineering feats of Germany and Italy… think again! Two innovative bridge projects are turning heads in these two European nations, ultimately prompting the question, what next?
In a symbolic gesture to bridge the divide between East and West Germany, the Magdeburg Water Bridge or Wasserstraßenkreuz is as quirky as it is an inspiring engineering
endeavour. Linking the two important German shipping canals which lead to the industrial Ruhr Valley, namely the
Elbe-Havel Canal and the Mittellandkanal, the bridge was completed in October 2003. Yet it must be seen to be believed! Enrol yourself in a German course Miami or a German course Dallas , brush up on your German language basics, and get over to Germany to witness this water wonder!
The project was actually conceived of as early as 1919, yet the turbulent history of twentieth century Germany put this plan on hold. Discover more about German language, history and contemporary engineering in a German course Kansas City . Yet speaking of putting on hold, we’re all waiting in suspense for the day that the planned Strait of Messina Bridge will come into being. If the project is
realised, it would be the world’s largest suspension bridge, spanning a distance of 3,300m or about 2 miles. The current holder of the record for world’s longest suspension bridge is the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge (1,991m) in Japan.
The Italian project aims to link the eastern tip of Sicily with the Italian mainland, over the Strait of Messina. Debate and discussion have so far slowed the project, and it has become one subject to much political involvement and public scrutiny. If you’re taking an Italian course Chicago or an Italian course Miami , you’ll be able to find out more in Italian-language street press and sources online.
