Visiting Research Professorship & Visiting Research Faculty (VRF) conducts Department of Biotechnology areas of Biotechnology and Applied Biology

Name of the professorship: The programme is called Visiting Research Professorship (VRP) & Visiting Research Faculty (VRF) for North Eastern Region (NER) 8 States and such Professor will be designated as “DBT Visiting Research Professor/ Faculty”.

Objective: The Professorship shall be awarded in recognition of outstanding contributions to any branch of Biotechnology and related fields. The main aim of the Professorship is to utilize the expertise and services of such outstanding biotechnology professionals for bringing advancement in the Biotechnology and Life Science related activities in various institutions of higher learning in the NER States of India.

The purpose of the scheme are: (a) The purpose of the scheme is to create a sustainable avenue for outstanding scientist/teachers/faculty drawn from universities/institutions from outside NE States to share their experiences and expertise with universities/institutions in the NER. (b) The empanelled scientists/faculty would be broadly selected from disciplines of (i) Biotechnology (ii) Life Sciences (iii) Medical & Health Sciences (iv) Agriculture & Animal Sciences (v) Bioinformatics (vi) Biomedical Engineering & related disciplines (vii) Biostatistics, (viii) Food & Nutrition (x) Environmental Biotechnology, etc. (c) Depending upon their areas of specialization, the empanelled scientist/faculty would help in making contribution in areas of education, research and training in NER institutions, in disciplines/subjects of required field of host institution in NER. (d) The empanelled scientists would be required to obtain endorsements from NE institutions where they would propose to visit under DBT VRP/VRF.

Eligibility: The award shall be given to active or superannuated Indian scientists/technologists, below the age of 70 years as on 30th September 2016. Those who are in service should get their applications forwarded through proper channel, with endorsement from the Head of their parent institution.

Number of VRPs : The maximum number of VRP/VRF would be upto 12 for the year 2016-17. However, if the Committee finds more eligible candidates, the number can be enhanced.

Duration : The duration of the Visiting Research Professorship/Faculty would be for a period ranging from three months to one year.

Details of the Award : i) The Visiting Professor will receive emoluments ranging from from Rs. 75,000/- per month to Rs. 100,000/- per month (+ HRA) based on the level of experience and expertise. Each selected candidate will also be paid economy class return airfare, consumable grant upto Rs. 50,000/- per annum (prorated for different periods), as well as a contingency grant of Rs. 25,000/- (fixed). In addition, Bench Fee provided to the Host institution is as follows: Rs.25, 000/- for three months tenure; Rs.50, 000/- for six months tenure, Rs.75, 000/- for 9 months tenure, and Rs.100, 000/- for one year tenure.

Selection Procedure: Expert committee constituted by the Department will evaluate the applications/nominations received and recommend suitable scientists/faculty for the “Visiting Research Professorship/ Faculty for NER” Award. The committee would normally meet once in a year or as and when required in the interest of the scheme.
