Fulbright Specialist Program 2017-18

Program Description :
The Fulbright Specialist Program provides an opportunity to Indian universities and institutions of higher learning to draw on the expertise of U.S. scholars and professionals and develop linkages with American institutions. Specialist grants focus on strengthening and supporting the development needs of institutions and broadening institutional cooperation. Fulbright Specialists work in their areas of expertise as they enhance their understanding of the cultural and education contexts of the host country through engagement with the host community.

Types of Institutions

Host institutions should be involved in university-level teaching or training, the expansion of partnerships between universities and specialized institutions, and the promotion of international and cross-institutional cooperation. Institutions that may be eligible to request a Fulbright Specialist include, but are not limited to:

Institutions of Higher Education
Government Institutions (ministries or agencies, courts, parliamentary or congressional bodies)
Cultural Institutions (conservatories, museums, etc.)
Non-Governmental Organizations including non-partisan, issue-centered institutions and think tanks
Medical Institutions (public health organizations, teaching hospitals, etc.)

United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF) was established under a bilateral agreement on educational exchange signed between India and the U.S. on February 2, 1950. On July 4, 2008, United States Ambassador David C. Mulford and Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon signed a historic new Fulbright agreement, making them equal partners and thereby strengthening educational exchanges between India and the United States. USIEF is administered by a bi-national Board of Directors consisting of ten Members, five Americans - nominated by the U.S. Ambassador and five Indians - nominated by the Government of India. The U.S. Ambassador to India and Indian Foriegn Secretary are the Honorary Co-Chairs of the USIEF Board
