Job Description

Geological Survey of India (GSI) invites application for the position Additional Director General 

No of Post: 01

Pay Band and grade pay or Pay Scale: Higher Administrative Grade (HAG) Rs. 67000- 79000, 3 % annual increment

Eligibility: Officer under the Central Government or State Government or Union Territories - 

(a) (i) holding analogous post on regular basis in the parent cadre/department/organization; or
(ii) with three years' service in the grade rendered after appointment thereto on regular basis in posts in the pay band-4, Rs. 37400-67000 plus grade pay of Rs. 10000 or equivalent in the parent cadre or department; and

(b) possessing the following educational qualification and experience:
i)Post Graduate degree from a recognized University: and (
ii) fifteen years' experience in the field of Finance, Budget, Accounts and Audit in the parent department.

Note 1: Period of deputation including period of deputation in another ex-cadre post held immediately preceding this appointment in the same or some other organization or department of the Central Government shall not exceed initially for five years.

Note 2: For the purpose of appointment on deputation basis. the service rendered on a regular basis by an officer prior to 1s January, 2006 the date from which the revised pay structure based on the 6th Pay Commission recommendations has been extended, shall be deemed to be service rendered in the corresponding grade pay or pay scale extended based on the recommendations of the Pay Commission except where there has been merge of more than one pre-revised scale of pay into one grade with a common grade pay or pay scale, and where this benefit will extend only for the post for which that grade pay or pay scale is the normal replacement grade without any upgradation.

Age Limit: The maximum age limit for appointment by deputation shall be not exceeding fifty-six years, as on the closing date of the receipt of application

The beginning of geological investigation in India was in the early part of the nineteenth century. A few amateur geologists associated with the Survey of India and Army initiated geological studies in the country. H.W. Voysey (1818-1823) of the Great Trigonometric Survey made the first Geological Map of Hyderabad region along with a detailed report. A committee for “The Investigation of Coal and Mineral Resources” was set up in 1837. The Secretary of the Committee John McClelland made the appointment of the first professional geologist. D. H. Williams was the first Geological Surveyor appointed by the East India Company in 1846. John McClelland for the first time used the term Geological Survey of India in his report in 1848. He designated himself as officiating Surveyor, Geological Survey till 1st April 1850. The Geological Survey of India (GSI) was set up in 1851 primarily to find coal deposits for the Railways.
