Doctor of Philosophy Programme

IISER Kolkata invites applications from motivated students for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programme for the Spring Semester 2017. The selected candidates can do Ph.D. in any of the following disciplines: Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Earth Sciences, Mathematics and Statistics and Physical Sciences.

Biological Science

Eligibility : Candidates having master's degree such as M.Sc/MS/ME/M.Tech/MVSc/MSc(Ag) degree or equivalent (with minimum 55% marks) in:  Any branch of biological sciences to pursue research in the broad fields of cellular and molecular biology, cancer biology, developmental biology, structural biology, chemical biology, plant molecular biology, behavioral biology and ecology, marine biology, neurobiology, biodiversity, microbiology, biophysics, bioinformatics, biotechnology and theoretical biology. Candidates from agricultural science and nutritional science backgrounds are also welcome to apply. OR Chemistry / physics / statistics / mathematics / computer application / computer science to pursue research in the interdisciplinary research areas as specified

Chemical Science

Eligibility : Bright and motivated candidates who have passed M.Sc. examination with minimum 55% marks in any field of Chemistry or Physics. There are two different channels for the admission in the PhD programme.

Mathematics and Statistics

Eligibility

Bayesian Statistics : A Master's degree in Statistics with a minimum of 55% marks or CGPA/CPI of 6.5 on a 10-point scale and successful qualification in National Level Examinations such as GATE/NBHM/NET etc.

Bio-Mathematics : A Master's degree, with minimum 55% marks or CGPA/CPI of 6.5 on a 10-point scale, in any field of Applied Mathematics, Applied Statistics Bio-technology, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Statistics and successful qualification in National Level Examinations such as GATE/NBHM/NET etc.

Several Complex Variables and Spectral Graph Theory: A Master's degree in Mathematics with a minimum of 55% marks or CGPA/CPI of 6.5 on a 10-point scale and successful qualification in National Level Examinations such as GATE/NBHM/NET etc.

Apart from satisfying the aforementioned minimum eligibility criteria, it is strongly recommended that candidates have their own valid PhD fellowship (UGC/CSIR-NET JRF, NBHM, DBT-JRF, ICMR-JRF, INSPIRE or any other equivalent fellowship). In the exceptional cases, a couple of Institute fellowship MAY BE available.

Earth Sciences

Eligibility : The Department of Earth Sciences (DES), IISER Kolkata is looking for bright and motivated students, who have completed their M.Sc. / MS / M.Sc. Tech / M. Tech (with minimum of 55% marks) in: 1) Geology/Applied Geology/Geophysics/Earth Sciences/Marine geology/ any other branch of Geological sciences Or 2) Physics/Mathematics/ Biological Sciences/ Environmental Sciences/ Computational Seismology interested to pursue research with the DES faculty member in the matching specialization. 

Final year post-graduate students who are yet to obtain their degree may also apply; however, they must have completed their degree at the time of admission.

Physical Sciences

Eligibility : Applications are invited from motivated candidates having Masters degree with at least 55% aggregate marks in any field of Physical Sciences for the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program. Final year post-graduate students who are yet to obtain their degree may also apply; however, they must complete the MSc/MS degree at the time of admission with the requisite 55% aggregate marks.

CAFM under DCS/DBS

Eligibility : Bright and motivated candidates who have passed M.Sc. and/or M.Tech. examinations with minimum 55% marks in the following areas of Chemistry or Biology: Chemistry with specializations in organic and physical chemistry; Biochemistry; Biology; Physics with an aptitude in computational materials science. There are two different channels for admission in the PhD programme.
