Job Description
Indian Institute of Astrophysics invite applications to Ph.D. and the Integrated M.Tech-Ph.D. (Tech.) programs
A. (a) you have qualified for JRF in the NET/CSIR/UGC exam, or, (b) scored 96 percentile or above in the JEST 2017, or, (c) scored 97 percentile or above in GATE.
Candidates applying for the IIA-Ph.D program based on their GATE / JEST score must have qualified in the PHYSICS paper of GATE / JEST.
Note : Percentile = [(T-R)/T]*100, where T = Total number of candidates, and R = All India Rank.

B. Important: Our admission criteria also requires that the candidate to have scored aggregate of 55% marks or above throughout his/her academic career.
C. Candidates who obtained their last degree (qualifying degree) before 2013 are not eligible to apply.
Tenure of the Programme :Students admitted to the Ph.D. programme are initially offered a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF). On completion of two years as a Junior Research Fellow, a student is offered a Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) after an assessment. The total tenure of the fellowship may not ordinarily exceed five years, inclusive of the one year course work. Once a student submits the thesis, an enhanced fellowship amount may be given for a further period of one year. The continuation of the fellowship beyond this period is not guaranteed.
Scholarship & Other Allowances : The stipend of a JRF is Rs. 25,000/- pm, and of a SRF is Rs. 28,000/- pm in addition to an annual book grant and medical facilities. Upon submission of the Ph.D. thesis the fellowship may be further increased. Hostel accomodation is normally provided to all students. If a student opts to stay in a private accomodation, a house rent allowance is paid as per the institute rules. Students are eligible to enroll in the contributory medical scheme of the institute. Subsidised canteen is available on-campus in Bangalore as well as at the field stations of the institute. During tours, students get travel and dearness allowances on par with staff members of the institute. They also receive support to participate in national and international scientific conferences.

The Indian Institute of Astrophysics is
a premier institute devoted to research in astronomy, astrophysics and
related physics. It traces its origins back to an observatory set up in
1786 at Madras which from the year 1792 began to formally function at
its Nungambakkam premises as the Madras Observatory. In 1899, the
observatory moved to Kodaikanal. In the year 1971, the Kodaikanal
Observatory became an autonomous society, the Indian Institute of
Astrophysics. The headquarters were shifted to Bangalore into its
present campus in Koramangala in 1975.
