Job Description

Applications are invited for the position of Maulana Azad Fellow (3 Fellowships) at the Maulana Abul Kalam And Institute of Asian Studies, Kolkata. 

The Fellowships are for the senior and eminent researchers who have outstanding contributions in research works and publications to their credit.  Maulana Azad Fellows are expected to undertake a programme of research that will lead to a substantial publication at the end of their tenure. 

Maulana Azad Fellows are also required to give academic leadership to programs linked to the Institute's main areas of interest Asian affairs from the mid-19th century onwards with special emphasis on their links with India, and preferably working on Maulana Azad's life, thought, political philosophy and his vision.

Maulana Azad Fellows will make themselves available at the Institute regularly. They are expected to be persons of distinction with a considerable record of publication and/or substantial experience of teaching and research. 


The duration of the Maulana Azad Fellowship is for three years with no provision for extension. The date of commencement of the Fellowship will be when the Fellow submits a joining report to the Director, MAKAIAS. 

The Maulana Azad Fellowship provides a consolidated stipend of Rs. 50,000.00 (Rupees Fifty thousand only) per month (Taxable).

The Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Institute of Asian Studies was set up at the joint initiative of the Government of India, Department of culture, Ministry of Human Resource Development and the Government of West Bengal. Registered as a Society under the West Bengal Registration of Societies' Act of 1961, with Prof. Nurul Hasan, the then Governor of West Bengal, as the President of the Society on the 4th of January 1993. It is funded by the Department of culture, Government of India. Presently, His Excellency, Governor of West Bengal, is the President of the Society. An acre of land in Bidhannagar (Salt Lake City), Kolkata, was allotted to the Institute by the Government of West Bengal for building the Institutes campus.
