Job Description
Applications are invited for
admission to the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme starting in July 2017. The departments/centres and areas in which these programme will be offered are:

Eligibility Criteria for Admission into PhD
Programme
Minimum CPI or Percentage of marks in
the qualifying degree, with specific requirements for different streams, have
been indicated below:
Note:(a)For
eligibility for financial assistance for regular category candidates,please
see the section “Financial Support” below.
(b)Minimum experience required for
Sponsored (Full-time), Self-Financed, Part-Time, and External categories of
candidates, have also been indicated below.
PhD in Engineering
For
admission to the PhD Programme in Engineering departments, a candidate must
satisfy one of the following criteria:
i)Master’s degree in
Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences/Veterinary Sciences/Pharmacy in a
relevant area with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60%
of marks.
ii)Four-year Bachelor’s degree in
Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences or equivalent in a relevant area with a
minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.
iii)Four-year Bachelor’s degree in
Engineering/Technology or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of
7.0, from any of the Centrally Funded
Technical Institutions . Details of the Institutions can be seen from http://mhrd.gov.in/technical-education-1
iv)
A candidate having a Four-year
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology or equivalent in a relevant area,
with a Postgraduate Degree in Management Science(Finance) or MBA with Finance
specialization or equivalent, is also considered for admission in the area of
specialization `Construction Management’, of the Department of Civil
Engineering. The candidate should have a minimum of 6.5 CPI or 60% marks in
Bachelor's level and 6.5 CPI or 60% marks in the postgraduate degree.
v) A candidate having MSc degree with
Mathematics as a subject at bachelor’s level is also considered for admission
in the Department of Civil Engineering. The candidate should have a minimum of
7.5 CPI or 70% marks in Master’s level with consistent first class at other
levels.
vi) A candidate having a Two-year Master's
degree (after completion of 4-year Bachelor's degree) or three-year Master's
degree (after completion of 3-year Bachelor's degree) in Engineering/
Technology/Science in a relevant area with minimum Cumulative Performance Index
(CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks,
Or
A
candidate with a Two-year MSc degree (after completion of 3-year Bachelor's
degree) in a relevant area with minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% marks,is also
considered for admission in the Department of Biotechnology.
vii)Postgraduates in Computer Science (ALCCS)
from Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE), with a
minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks, are also
eligible to apply for admission in to PhD programme in Computer Science and
Engineering
viii)A regular student of IIT Guwahati who is
continuing his/her MTech studies and having a minimum CPI of 8.0 at the end of
second semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the
beginning of his/her third semester of study. Such students can receive only
PhD Degree.
ix)A student of IIT Guwahati who is
continuing his/her BTech studies and having a minimum CPI of 6.5 at the end of
sixth semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the
beginning of his/her seventh semester of study. Such students can receive dual
BTech and PhD Degree. Both the degrees will be awarded after completion of PhD
degree.
PhD in Design
For
admission to the PhD Programme in Design, a candidate must satisfy one of the
following criteria:
i) Candidates having MArch/MDes degree or
MTech/ME degree in a relevant area, with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
ii)
Master’s degree in Applied Arts/Ergonomics/Fine
Arts/Psychology/Physiology/Occupational Safety and Health/ Journalism/ Mass
Media Communication with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks.
iii)
Two-year Master’s degree in Management (MBA or equivalent) with a minimum CPI
of 6.5 or 60% marks with relevant studies in Design field, and Bachelor’s
degree in any discipline.
iv)
Four-year Bachelor’s degree or
equivalent in Design or Engineering/Technology or Five-year BArch degree or
equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.
v)Four-year
Undergraduate Diploma in Design (NID or equivalent), with postgraduate
qualification in relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks.
vi)Four-year
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Design or Engineering/Technology or Five-year BArch
degree or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0, from any of
the Centrally Funded Technical Institutions. Details of the Institutions can be

vii)A two-year Post-graduate Diploma in Design and relevant areas (NID/CEPT
or equivalent) with first class at Bachelor’s level.
viii)BFA (4-year professional programme, after 10+2)/GD Art (5-year programme after
10th standard) with one year professional experience, with a minimum CPI of 7.5
or 70% of marks.
ix)Master of Computer Application(MCA) degree,
with one year of professional experience, with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
x)A regular student of IIT Guwahati who is
continuing his/her MDes studies and having a minimum CPI of 8.0 at the end of
second semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the
beginning of his/her third semester of study. Such students can receive only
PhD Degree.
xi)A student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing
his/her BDes studies and having a minimum CPI of 7.0 at the end of sixth
semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the
beginning of his/her seventh semester of study. Such students can receive dual
BDes and PhD Degree. Both the degrees will be awarded after completion of PhD
degree.
PhD in Science
For
admission to the PhD Programme in Science departments, a candidate must satisfy
one of the following criteria:
i)Master’s degree in Science in a relevant
area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
ii)Master’s degree in
Engineering/Technology/Design in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or
60% of marks.
iii) Four-year Bachelor’s degree in
Engineering/Technology/Design/Science
from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)/Indian Institute of Science
(IISc) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.
iv) Four-year Bachelor’s degree in a related
area in Engineering/Technology/Design/Science (from other than IITs/IISc) in a
relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.
PhD in Humanities and Social Sciences
For
admission to the PhD Programme in the department of Humanities and Social
Sciences (HSS), a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:
i) Master’s degree in Arts/Commerce/Science in
a relevant area with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent.
ii)Master’s degree in
Engineering/Technology/Design in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or
60% marks.
iii)Four-year Bachelor’s degree from an Indian
Institute of Technology (IIT) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.
iv)Four-year Bachelor’s degree in
Engineering/Technology/Design or equivalent (from other than IITs) in a
relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% marks.
For PhD in Centre for the Environment, Centre
for Energy, and Centre for Nanotechnology
i)Master’s Degree in
Engineering/Technology/Design/Architecture/Medical Sciences in a relevant area
with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
ii)Four-year Bachelor’s degree in
Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences or equivalent in a relevant area with a
minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.
iii)Four-year Bachelor’s degree in
Engineering/Technology or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of
7.0, from any of the Centrally Funded Technical Institutions. Details of the Institutions can be seen from

iv)Master’s degree in Science in a relevant
area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks.
v)Master’s degree in Social Sciences, in a
relevant area, with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks, is also considered for
admission to the Centre for the Environment.
For PhD in Centre for Linguistic Science and Technology
i)Master’s degree in Engineering/
Technology in CSE / ECE / EEE or equivalent / Master of Design with a minimum
Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
ii)Master of Science in CSE / IT / ECE /
Physics / Mathematics / Statistics/Speech and Language Pathology/ Audiology or
equivalent, with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
iii)Master of Arts in Linguistics/any
language with specialization in Linguistics/Language Studies or equivalent,
with a minimum CPI of 6.0 or 55% of marks.
iv)Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/
Technology in CSE / ECE / EEE or equivalent / Four-year Bachelor’s degree in
Design, with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.
v)Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/ Technology in CSE / ECE / EEE or equivalent / Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Design, with a minimum CPI of 7.0, from any of the Centrally Funded Technical Institutions. vi)Four-year Undergraduate Diploma in
Design (NID/ CEPT or equivalent), with postgraduate qualification in relevant
area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks.
vii)A two-year Post-graduate Diploma in Design
(NID/ CEPT or equivalent) with first class at Bachelor’s level.
Financial Support (For regular students, who are Indian nationals)
Junior Research Fellow(JRF)
Qualification: B.E./B.Tech. or equivalent with valid and qualifying GATE score [valid and qualifying CEED score (for Dept. of Design)] above the prescribed cut off level OR M.Sc. or equivalent with GATE score above the prescribed cut off level/NET/INSPIRE qualification OR M.A. in Humanities and Social Sciences or equivalent with NET qualification OR ME/MTech or equivalent [GATE/CEED/NET/INSPIRE score/certificate requirement is exempted for a candidate with Master’s (M.A./M.Sc.) degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) with minimum CPI of 8.0 OR a Bachelor’s (BTech/BDes) degree from a Centrally Funded Technical Institution(CFTI) with minimum CPI of 7.0] OR ME/MTech/MDes or equivalent
Assistantship Rates : 1 & 2 Year : Rs.25,000/- p.m.
Senior Research Fellow(SRF)
JRF with 2(two) years of research experience
