OUR WORK IN INDIA

TNC’s India program was launched in 2015. TNC is registered in India as a not-for-profit Section 8 Company. The team is comprised of 25+ high-performing individuals with an annual operations budget around USD 5.5M. We are focused on eight initiatives that are advancing environmental solutions for some of India’s most pressing challenges. Currently our programs cover six States of India and we are working with more than 15 partner organizations. Both the program and budget are growing at a healthy rate. We are working hard to demonstrate conservation results and achieve early “win-wins” that promote equitable economic development while conserving natural resources for people and nature. We aim to meet increasing demands for energy resources, water supply and food production with low environmental impact, and in a mind-set where nature is seen as a critical input to these key human needs. We do this by engaging governments, the private sector and civil society to ensure that conservation is a critical outcome in economic development. We address challenges to nature with the goal of promoting healthy waters, lands, and oceans and promoting Climate Mitigation and Adaptation. TNC pursues a shared nature-people agenda and is working to demonstrate that conservation and development can be pursued in tandem.

YOUR POSITION WITH TNC

We seek a Project Associate - Crop Residue Management to provide programmatic support to a major collaborative initiative to eliminate crop residue burning in Northwest India. This part of the country, which follows a predominantly rice-wheat cropping system, is considered as one of the most important regions for India’s food security. The growing pressure on land for food production and intensification of agriculture in Northwest India over the past few decades has led to serious issues of mono cropping, overexploitation of groundwater, wider adoption of practices like crop residue burning, land degradation, declining organic matter content of the soil, and loss of biodiversity, leading to the overall degradation of the fragile agro-ecosystem of the region.

Farmers in the key north-western states of Punjab and Haryana follow the practice of rice residue burning (post the rice harvest), in the months of October-November to prepare their fields for sowing of the wheat crop. This widespread burning of rice residue is a significant source of air pollution, particularly in the winter months. This practice of rice residue burning leads to emissions of greenhouse gases and harmful particulate matter (air pollution) that cause serious human health impacts, soil health deterioration, and is negatively impacting the long-term agricultural productivity of the region.

The Nature Conservancy-India (TNC-India), in partnership with the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT), Borlaug Institute for South Asia (BISA), Precision Agriculture for Development (PAD) and Syngenta Foundation India (SFI) are supporting the adoption of in-situ (on field) crop residue management through use of conservation agriculture technologies like Happy Seeder (a tractor-mounted machine that sows wheat using a zero-till approach and spreads the residue over the sown area as a water conserving mulch that also prevents weed growth) to end crop residue burning. The collaborative initiative is being implemented in 7 districts across Punjab (Fatehgarh Sahib, Kapurthala, Ludhiana and Patiala) and Haryana (Ambala, Karnal and Kurukshetra), where our partners CIMMYT and BISA are setting up demonstration villages to generate awareness, training farmers on practices and promoting peer-to-peer learning; PAD is undertaking mobile phone-based behaviour change communication activities; and SFI is promoting agri-entrepreneurs for happy seeder based services and associated agronomical practices. TNC – India is leading activities in support of policy development, stakeholder engagement and communications, and leveraging technology, finance, and partnerships to achieve scale.

This position is based in Delhi with periodic travel to Punjab and Haryana. The position will directly support the Project Lead - Crop Residue Management in advancing the organization’s strategy to support climate, biodiversity, and human well-being outcomes. The Project Associate - Crop Residue Management is primarily responsible for program administrative oversight and partner coordination. This position will play a key role in the entire project management life cycle of the crop residue program, ensuring delivery of commitments on time and budget in collaboration with the Project Lead.
