Job designation: - IFS Officer

The Indian Foreign Service is one of the premier service branches of the UPSC where candidates are selected based on the ranking of their marks and are trained as diplomats to represent India at foreign countries where they can express the interests and concerns of India.

Duties and responsibilities of an IFS Officer

An IFS Officer’s main responsibility is to maintain diplomatic relationship with the nations in which India has major interests and keep up that that relationship so that India can have a stable foreign relationship with other countries 

  • Changes in the foreign policy of India

  • Maintaining cordial relationships with foreign nations

  • Reporting any changes or updates of India’s status in that country

  • Negotiating terms and deals with the foreign nation

  • Embassies

  • United Nations

  • Foreign offices under the Indian government

Work schedule of an IFS Officer

Generally, it is 9AM to 5PM but they might have to work overtime depending on the workload.


Qualifications required to become an IFS Officer


One must posses a degree certificate in any stream although science degree holders are mostly preferred. One must be below 30 and must have cleared the UPSC Prelims, UPSC Mains and the Interview to be trained at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Mussourie. 


Under-graduate courses to become an IFS Officer


  • Bachelor degree from any stream with 50% pass or above


Eligibility to pursue the course: -


  • Class 12thPass from any stream with 50 to 60 % pass or above

  • Handling pressure without hesitation

  • Being cordial and professional at all time

  • Clear cut communication with other foreign diplomats

  • Knowledge in a foreign language

  • Stamina to work overtime

Salary expectations

  • Entry level salary: - Rs. 7 lakhs per annum as per junior scale

  • Experienced-level salary: - Rs. 28 lakhs per annum as foreign secretary
