Job designation: - IRS Officer

The IRS is one of the Central Government jobs under Group A where the officers within this division are selected through their UPSC marks in Prelims, Mains and Interview. They are trained in the revenue, taxes and the monetary framework of the country.

Duties and responsibilities of an IRS Officer

The responsibility of an IRS officer is to make the monetary network of country work smoothly and efficiently. It is a very difficult job because many of IRS officers have been prone to corruption or assassinated when they were handling sensitive cases

  •  Clearing of corruption in the system

  •  Record checking of money flow

  •  Investigating cases of high importance 

  •  Co-ordinating with other officials to increase investigation power in cases of importance

Generally, it is 9AM to 5PM but they might have to work overtime depending on the workload.


Qualifications required to become an IRS Officer

One must possess a degree certificate in any stream although science degree holders are mostly preferred. One must be below 30 and must have cleared the UPSC Prelims, UPSC Mains and the Interview to be trained at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie. 


Under-graduate courses to become an IRS Officer


  • Bachelor degree from any stream with 50% pass or above


Eligibility to pursue the course: -


  • Class 12th Pass from any stream with 50 to 60 % pass or above

  • Clear cut communication with other foreign diplomats

  • Stamina to work overtime

Salary expectations

  • Entry level salary: - Rs. 4.8 lakhs per annum (Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax)

  • Experienced-level salary: - Rs. 9.6 lakhs per annum (Principal Chief Commissioner of Tax)
