Job Description
Position Summary:
We are seeking a skilled and innovative 3D Printing Engineer to join our additive manufacturing team. The 3D Printing Engineer will be responsible for designing, preparing, and executing 3D print jobs using a range of technologies such as FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling), SLA (Stereolithography), SLS (Selective Laser Sintering), and DMLS (Direct Metal Laser Sintering). This role requires a strong understanding of digital modeling, materials science, and printing techniques to produce high-quality functional prototypes, parts, and end-use products.
You will collaborate with design engineers, R&D teams, and production departments to implement advanced additive manufacturing processes and support ongoing development in rapid prototyping, tooling, and low-volume production. This is a hands-on engineering role involving CAD work, printer operation, machine maintenance, quality control, and process optimization.
Key Responsibilities:
1. 3D Printing Operations:

Operate and manage 3D printers (FDM, SLA, SLS, DMLS, PolyJet, or other technologies) based on project requirements.

Set up machines for print jobs including calibrating printers, loading materials, and selecting print settings.

Monitor printing processes to ensure accuracy, detect print failures, and maintain consistent quality.

Perform post-processing tasks such as support removal, curing, cleaning, and surface finishing.
2. Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM):

Collaborate with product designers and engineers to modify or create parts optimized for 3D printing.

Evaluate STL or CAD files for printability and apply necessary modifications to avoid failures or defects.

Utilize slicing software (e.g., Cura, PrusaSlicer, PreForm, GrabCAD Print, or Materialise Magics) to prepare files for printing.

Apply design strategies that reduce material usage, minimize print time, and improve structural performance.
3. Material and Technology Management:

Select appropriate materials (plastics, resins, metals, composites) based on mechanical, thermal, and aesthetic properties.

Maintain inventory of consumables and order materials based on project schedules and usage trends.

Test and qualify new materials or 3D printing technologies for production readiness.

Keep up to date with advancements in additive manufacturing materials and printer capabilities.
4. Process Optimization and Troubleshooting:

Analyze print failures and diagnose issues related to hardware, software, or file preparation.

Develop and document printing profiles and process parameters for different materials and part types.

Continuously improve printing accuracy, surface finish, and mechanical properties through process iteration.

Identify ways to reduce costs, improve efficiency, and shorten lead times through smart design and production methods.
5. Quality Control and Documentation:

Perform dimensional inspections and visual quality checks on printed parts.

Use tools such as calipers, micrometers, and surface gauges to measure accuracy against CAD models.

Maintain accurate records of print jobs, results, settings used, and issues encountered.

Document standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safety guidelines for equipment usage.
6. Cross-Functional Collaboration:

Work closely with mechanical engineers, industrial designers, R&D scientists, and production teams.

Participate in product development meetings and advise on the feasibility and limitations of 3D printing.

Support marketing, prototyping, or customer demo projects with quick-turn 3D printed models.

Train and support other team members in safe and effective 3D printing practices.
