Job Description
Overview
An AC Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. These systems regulate temperature, air quality, and humidity in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. AC Technicians are skilled tradespeople who ensure that HVAC systems operate efficiently and safely.
This role requires a combination of technical expertise, problem-solving skills, physical stamina, and customer service capabilities. AC Technicians may work independently or as part of a team, often under the supervision of an HVAC supervisor or project manager.
Key Responsibilities
1. Installation of HVAC Systems

Install new air conditioning systems including central air, ductless mini-splits, rooftop units, and window units.

Lay out and connect electrical wiring, thermostats, refrigerant lines, and ductwork.

Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and installation instructions.

Conduct site inspections to determine the suitability of spaces for AC installation.

Ensure installations comply with relevant safety codes and manufacturer guidelines.
2. Maintenance and Servicing

Perform scheduled maintenance on HVAC systems to ensure optimal performance.

Clean condenser and evaporator coils, change filters, and check fluid levels.

Lubricate motors, bearings, and other moving parts.

Test system functionality and calibrate thermostats and controls.

Identify potential issues during routine inspections and recommend preventive measures.
3. Troubleshooting and Repairs

Diagnose mechanical and electrical issues with air conditioning units.

Repair or replace defective components such as compressors, motors, relays, and fans.

Use tools such as multimeters, pressure gauges, and leak detectors to identify faults.

Recharge refrigerant lines and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.

Document repairs and parts replaced, providing reports to supervisors or clients.
4. Customer Interaction and Support

Communicate effectively with clients to explain problems, repair processes, and preventive tips.

Provide cost estimates and timelines for repair or installation services.

Maintain a professional appearance and deliver exceptional customer service.

Offer recommendations for energy-efficient solutions and upgrades.
5. Compliance and Safety

Follow all safety guidelines while working with high-voltage equipment, ladders, and potentially hazardous chemicals.

Ensure all installations and repairs meet local, state, and federal codes.

Properly handle and dispose of refrigerants in accordance with EPA regulations.

Education and Certification Requirements
