An Accessibility Tester Trainee is an entry-level position designed for individuals who are beginning their career in digital accessibility testing. This role involves learning how to evaluate websites, mobile applications, and digital content to ensure they are accessible to people with disabilities, including those who use assistive technologies like screen readers, screen magnifiers, voice input tools, or alternative input devices.

As a trainee, you will be guided by senior accessibility professionals and will undergo hands-on training to understand accessibility standards, compliance guidelines, and testing tools. You will assist in identifying accessibility issues, documenting findings, and recommending improvements in line with recognized standards such as WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines), Section 508, and ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) requirements.

This role is ideal for individuals interested in technology, user experience (UX), and inclusion. The position provides a valuable opportunity to contribute to digital equality while developing skills in quality assurance, accessibility auditing, and inclusive design practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Training and Learning:

    • Participate in structured training sessions on digital accessibility, including WCAG guidelines, ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications), and usability principles.

    • Learn about common assistive technologies and how they interact with digital content.

    • Stay updated on accessibility standards, laws, and best practices.

  2. Accessibility Testing:

    • Assist in conducting manual and automated accessibility tests on websites, web applications, and mobile apps.

    • Use tools such as axe, WAVE, Lighthouse, NVDA, VoiceOver, TalkBack, and keyboard-only navigation to identify accessibility barriers.

    • Observe and record the behavior of assistive technologies in relation to digital interfaces.

  3. Documentation and Reporting:

    • Help document accessibility issues clearly and concisely, including steps to reproduce, expected outcomes, and relevant screenshots or recordings.

    • Organize findings in spreadsheets, testing platforms, or issue trackers (e.g., JIRA, Bugzilla).

    • Collaborate with developers and designers to understand technical constraints and provide input on fixes.

  4. Collaboration and Communication:

    • Work closely with quality assurance teams, UX designers, developers, and accessibility specialists.

    • Participate in team meetings, accessibility reviews, and sprint planning sessions.

    • Support efforts to create inclusive and accessible user experiences.

  5. Continuous Improvement:

    • Seek feedback from mentors and apply it to enhance your testing skills and reporting accuracy.

    • Contribute ideas to improve the accessibility testing process.

    • Explore additional accessibility areas such as document accessibility (e.g., PDFs), color contrast evaluation, and captioning/subtitling.
