Assistant Manager – Production – API Manufacturing

1. Job Purpose

To lead and supervise API manufacturing operations for the assigned production area/plant, ensuring safe, compliant, efficient and timely production in line with the production plan, quality standards, GMP requirements and EHS guidelines.

The role is responsible for shift operations, manpower deployment, batch execution, productivity, yield, process compliance, documentation and continuous improvement.

2. Key Responsibilities

A. Production Planning & Execution

• Execute the daily, weekly and monthly production plan for the assigned manufacturing area.
• Ensure timely completion of batches within approved cycle times.
• Monitor production performance against plan and take corrective actions for gaps.
• Ensure optimum utilization of manpower, equipment and manufacturing capacity.
• Coordinate with Planning, Warehouse, QA, QC, Engineering and Maintenance to ensure uninterrupted production.
• Identify and escalate constraints affecting production commitments.

B. API Manufacturing Operations

• Supervise manufacturing activities including:

  • Raw material charging
  • Reactor operations
  • Reaction and process monitoring
  • Filtration
  • Centrifugation
  • Washing
  • Drying
  • Solvent recovery
  • Milling / Micronization
  • Packing and material transfer
• Ensure all operations are performed as per approved SOPs, BMRs and process parameters.
• Monitor critical process parameters and ensure timely intervention in case of abnormalities.
• Ensure proper equipment preparation, cleaning, line clearance and changeover.

C. Shift & Manpower Management

• Lead production operations across assigned shifts.
• Plan and deploy operators, technicians, officers and contract/union workforce based on operational requirements.
• Ensure optimum manpower utilization and productivity.
• Conduct shift briefings and ensure effective communication of production priorities.
• Ensure proper shift handover and continuity of critical manufacturing activities.
• Develop the capability of production personnel through training and on-the-job coaching.

D. GMP, Quality & Compliance

• Ensure strict compliance with cGMP, SOPs, GDP, data integrity and site quality systems.
• Ensure accurate and timely completion of BMRs, logbooks, checklists and production records.
• Review production documentation for completeness and compliance.
• Ensure deviations, incidents and abnormalities are immediately reported and investigated.
• Participate in deviation, CAPA, change control and root-cause investigations.
• Ensure readiness for internal, customer and regulatory audits.

E. Yield & Productivity Improvement

• Monitor batch yield, productivity and process losses.
• Drive improvement in:

  • Yield
  • OEE
  • Equipment utilization
  • Manpower productivity
  • Solvent consumption
  • Material losses
• Identify recurring production losses and implement corrective actions.
• Lead Kaizen, Lean and Manufacturing Excellence initiatives within the assigned area.

F. Safety & EHS

• Ensure safe execution of all production activities.
• Maintain a strong Zero Harm culture within the production team.
• Ensure compliance with PPE, work permits, LOTO and chemical-handling procedures.
• Ensure safe handling of solvents, hazardous chemicals and process materials.
• Conduct toolbox talks and safety briefings.
• Ensure near misses, unsafe conditions and incidents are reported and closed with appropriate corrective actions.
• Participate in emergency preparedness and mock drills.

G. Equipment & Maintenance Coordination

• Coordinate with Engineering and Maintenance for preventive and breakdown maintenance.
• Ensure critical equipment availability for planned production.
• Monitor equipment-related downtime and identify recurring failures.
• Support equipment qualification, validation, commissioning and modification activities.
• Ensure proper equipment status identification before and after maintenance.

H. Material & Inventory Coordination

• Coordinate with Warehouse for timely availability of raw materials, intermediates and packing materials.
• Ensure proper material identification, status and traceability.
• Minimize material losses, wastage and excess consumption.
• Ensure reconciliation of materials as per approved procedures.
