Position Overview

A Cashier plays a critical role in ensuring smooth and accurate cash handling and delivering excellent customer service. The position involves managing cash transactions, billing, payment collections, and providing a positive shopping experience for customers.

Cashiers are the first point of contact for customers and represent the organization’s brand, professionalism, and service standards. The role demands accuracy, integrity, good communication skills, and a customer-centric approach to ensure operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.

This job is suitable for individuals who are detail-oriented, trustworthy, and enjoy interacting with people.

Key Responsibilities

1. Cash Handling and Transaction Management

  • Accurately handle cash, credit card, UPI, and digital wallet transactions.

  • Maintain proper records of cash inflows and outflows in accordance with company policies.

  • Verify the authenticity of currency notes and check for counterfeit bills.

  • Prepare daily cash summaries and reconcile the closing balance with the accounts team.

  • Safely deposit collected cash in the designated cash vault or bank, as instructed.

2. Billing and Point-of-Sale Operations

  • Operate billing systems and POS machines efficiently to generate invoices.

  • Ensure correct pricing, discounts, and applicable taxes are applied to each transaction.

  • Handle refunds, exchanges, and credit notes as per company guidelines.

  • Provide accurate payment receipts and maintain proper documentation for audit purposes.

3. Customer Service and Interaction

  • Greet customers warmly and provide a friendly, professional, and helpful experience.

  • Assist customers with billing queries, payment issues, and transaction-related concerns.

  • Offer information about ongoing promotions, discounts, and loyalty programs.

  • Handle customer complaints politely and escalate unresolved issues to supervisors.

4. Cash Reconciliation and Reporting

  • Conduct start-of-day and end-of-day cash counts to ensure accuracy.

  • Maintain proper records of cash, card, and digital payments in reconciliation reports.

  • Identify and report any discrepancies, shortages, or excess cash immediately to the accounts department.

  • Prepare daily transaction summaries and submit reports to management.

5. Coordination with Internal Teams

  • Collaborate with the sales, inventory, and accounts teams to ensure smooth billing and payment processing.

  • Communicate effectively with store managers, floor staff, and supervisors to resolve customer concerns.

  • Support marketing teams during special promotions, sales events, and festive seasons.

6. Compliance and Security

  • Adhere to company policies, SOPs, and cash-handling guidelines.

  • Maintain confidentiality regarding financial transactions and customer data.

  • Ensure strict compliance with audit standards and regulatory requirements.

  • Follow security protocols to prevent theft, fraud, and unauthorized transactions.

Required Skills and Competencies

1. Cash Handling Skills

  • Proficiency in managing cash, coins, and payment modes.

  • Accuracy in performing billing, calculations, and reconciliations.

  • Familiarity with POS systems, billing software, and digital payment applications.

2. Customer Service Excellence

  • Ability to handle customers politely, patiently, and professionally.

  • Excellent listening skills to understand and resolve customer queries.

  • Positive attitude and problem-solving capabilities to maintain customer satisfaction.

3. Technical Skills

  • Basic knowledge of computer operations, billing systems, and POS terminals.

  • Experience with digital wallets, UPI apps, and online payment platforms.

  • Comfort using spreadsheets and maintaining basic transaction reports.

  • Good verbal communication in English and local languages.

  • Ability to explain payment details, offers, and billing processes clearly.

  • Team player who can collaborate effectively with colleagues and supervisors.

  • High level of accuracy while handling cash and preparing bills.

  • Ability to spot billing errors, discrepancies, and incorrect entries.
