Job Description
Position Summary
The CNC Cutting Machine Operator/Helper is responsible for assisting in the operation and maintenance of CNC (Computer Numerical Control) cutting machines used to shape, cut, and prepare iron and steel materials for retail and wholesale customers. This role is crucial in ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and safety in material processing. The position involves setting up CNC machines, loading raw materials, performing basic programming, inspecting cut parts, and supporting general warehouse or shop activities as needed.
This is a hands-on role suitable for individuals who are mechanically inclined, safety-conscious, and eager to work in a fast-paced industrial environment.
Key Responsibilities
CNC Machine Operation

Set up and operate CNC plasma, flame, or laser cutting machines according to job orders and specifications.

Load raw iron and steel materials onto the machine bed using overhead cranes or forklifts (training provided if needed).

Input or select correct programs for various cut shapes and sizes.

Monitor machine operation during the cutting process to ensure accuracy and prevent errors or machine damage.

Make adjustments to machine speed, feed rate, or cutting path based on material type and thickness.
Material Handling and Preparation

Assist in measuring, marking, and positioning raw material before cutting.

Unload and stack finished cut pieces in an organized manner.

Sort and label cut pieces for customer orders or storage.

Keep track of material usage and notify supervisors of low stock or material quality issues.
Quality Control

Inspect completed parts using measuring tools (e.g., tape measure, calipers, squares) to ensure they meet dimensional and quality specifications.

Identify and report any defects or inconsistencies in the cut material.

Follow customer specifications for sizing, quantity, and surface finish.

Rework or assist in recutting parts if issues are identified.
Machine Maintenance and Cleaning

Perform basic maintenance tasks such as changing nozzles, cleaning torches, and lubricating moving parts.

Report any mechanical or electrical issues to the supervisor or maintenance team.

Clean work areas and keep the CNC machine and surroundings free of scrap and debris.

Ensure proper storage of tools, parts, and equipment after use.
Support Tasks and Shop Assistance

Assist other workers with material handling, packing, or general shop activities when not operating the CNC machine.

Help load and unload delivery trucks or customer vehicles as needed.

Participate in periodic stock counts or inventory checks.

Follow verbal and written instructions from shop supervisors.
Required Skills and Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Basic mechanical or technical aptitude; prior experience with CNC machines is an asset but not required for helpers.

Ability to read and interpret simple drawings, measurements, and job instructions.

Understanding of material types, especially steel plates, pipes, and structural steel (angles, channels, beams).

Familiarity with measuring tools such as tape measures, rulers, and calipers.

Physical ability to lift, carry, and move heavy steel pieces (up to 25–50 kg with assistance or equipment).

Willingness to wear personal protective equipment (gloves, safety glasses, helmet, boots).

Strong attention to detail, safety, and cleanliness.

Ability to follow directions and work independently or as part of a team.
