Job Description
Receive, clean, pack, and sterilize surgical instruments and trays
Operate sterilization equipment (e.g., autoclaves, ETO, plasma sterilizers)
Ensure proper labeling, storage, and documentation of sterile supplies
Conduct quality checks to maintain sterility assurance
Assist in inventory management of CSSD consumables
Adhere to infection control protocols and safety standards
Key Responsibilities:
1. Cleaning and Decontamination
-
Receive used instruments and medical equipment from various hospital departments including the operating theatre (OT), ICU, emergency, and wards.

Perform initial inspection of items for damage or malfunction before processing.
-
Manually clean instruments using detergents, enzymatic solutions, and ultrasonic cleaners to remove visible soil and bio-burden.

Operate automated washer-disinfectors and follow correct decontamination procedures.
2. Sterilization of Instruments and Equipment
-
Prepare, pack, and label surgical instruments, linen packs, trays, and other items for sterilization.

Operate autoclaves (steam sterilizers), ETO (ethylene oxide) machines, plasma sterilizers, and other relevant equipment based on item category and sterilization method.

Monitor and document sterilization cycles and parameters such as temperature, pressure, and time.

Conduct biological and chemical indicator tests to verify sterilization efficacy.
3. Assembly and Packing
-
Assemble instrument sets and trays according to surgical or procedural requirements.

Inspect and test all instruments for cleanliness, functionality, and proper alignment before packing.

Wrap and label instruments appropriately with sterilization and expiration details.

Ensure correct documentation and tracking of all sterilized sets and materials.
4. Inventory and Supply Management
-
Maintain accurate records of instrument inventory, sterilization logs, and supply usage.
-
Coordinate with procurement or stores department for replenishment of consumables such as wraps, pouches, disinfectants, and sterilization indicators.

Issue sterilized equipment and packs to various departments based on daily schedules and emergency requests.
5. Infection Control and Quality Assurance
-
Follow hospital infection prevention and control (IPC) guidelines strictly.

Participate in routine quality assurance procedures such as load checks, sterilization audits, and machine maintenance.

Ensure timely reporting of non-functioning equipment or failure in sterilization.

Maintain a clean, organized, and contamination-free work environment at all times.
6. Communication and Coordination
-
Liaise with OT, ICU, and ward staff for scheduling and urgent requirements.

Communicate equipment shortages, delays, or problems to supervisors or clinical teams.

Ensure smooth coordination during emergencies, surgeries, or peak hours.
7. Documentation and Record Keeping
-
Maintain detailed records of sterilization cycles, test results, instrument traceability, and equipment maintenance.

Ensure compliance with hospital documentation policies and regulatory standards such as NABH or JCI.

Submit periodic reports on departmental performance, usage statistics, and issues encountered.
