Job Description

Perform dialysis procedures for patients as per the doctor’s instructions.
 
Prepare and maintain dialysis machines and equipment.
 
Monitor patients’ vital signs before, during, and after dialysis sessions.
 
Ensure infection control and hygiene standards in the dialysis unit.
 
Handle emergencies and complications during dialysis treatment.
 
Maintain accurate patient records and dialysis logs.
 
Educate patients on post-dialysis care and dietary recommendations.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Dialysis Machine Setup and Operation:

    • Prepare, set up, and maintain dialysis equipment according to protocols and physician instructions.

    • Ensure dialysis machines are in optimal working condition and perform equipment checks before, during, and after each dialysis session.

    • Adjust machine settings (e.g., flow rates, pressures, and alarms) according to prescribed treatments and patient needs.

  2. Patient Monitoring During Dialysis:

    • Monitor patients closely during dialysis sessions, checking vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, and oxygen levels) and ensuring patient comfort.

    • Observe for any complications or adverse reactions (e.g., hypotension, dizziness, nausea) during dialysis and respond appropriately.

    • Report any changes in the patient's condition to the supervising nurse or physician promptly.

  3. Patient Preparation and Assistance:

    • Assist patients with the setup process, including positioning them on the dialysis bed, preparing their access site, and ensuring the insertion of dialysis needles (under the supervision of a nurse or physician).

    • Educate and inform patients about the dialysis process and any pre- or post-treatment care instructions.

    • Ensure patient privacy and comfort throughout the procedure, addressing any concerns they may have.

  4. Treatment Documentation and Record-Keeping:

    • Accurately document patient details, including vital signs, dialysis settings, and treatment times in patient records.

    • Record any complications or deviations from the standard treatment protocol, ensuring that all information is communicated effectively to the healthcare team.

    • Maintain accurate logs of dialysis treatment sessions and patient responses.

  5. Equipment Maintenance and Troubleshooting:

    • Perform regular maintenance, cleaning, and disinfection of dialysis machines and related equipment to prevent infection and ensure optimal performance.

    • Troubleshoot any issues with dialysis machines or equipment, ensuring timely resolution to prevent treatment delays or interruptions.

    • Monitor and ensure the proper disposal of medical waste, such as needles, tubing, and other supplies, following hospital protocols and safety guidelines.

  6. Infection Control and Safety:

    • Follow strict infection control protocols, including hand hygiene, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and sterile techniques during the dialysis procedure.

    • Ensure proper cleaning and disinfecting of dialysis machines and accessories between each patient use.

    • Adhere to hospital and departmental policies regarding infection prevention, ensuring a safe environment for both patients and staff.

  7. Patient Education:

    • Provide patients with guidance on self-care, diet, and fluid intake between dialysis sessions to help manage their condition.

    • Offer information regarding potential complications of dialysis and when to seek medical attention, empowering patients to take an active role in their healthcare.

  8. Collaboration and Communication:

    • Work closely with registered nurses, nephrologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated and effective care for patients undergoing dialysis.

    • Report any issues, changes in patient condition, or concerns during dialysis treatments to the supervising nurse or physician.

    • Maintain clear and compassionate communication with patients and their families about treatment plans and expectations.
