IISER Kolkata invites applications from motivated students
for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programme for the Spring
2019. The selected candidates can do Ph.D. in any of the following disciplines:
Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Earth Sciences, Mathematics and
Statistics and Physical Sciences.
Biological Sciences
Applications are invited from motivated candidates having master's degree such as M.Sc/MS/ME/M.Tech/MVSc/MSc(Ag) degree or equivalent (with minimum 55% marks) in: Any branch of biological sciences to pursue research in the broad fields of cellular and molecular biology, cancer biology, developmental biology, structural biology, chemical biology, plant biology, plant molecular and developmental biology, plant genetics, plant tissue culture, behavioral biology and ecology, genetics, marine biology, neurobiology, biodiversity, microbiology, biophysics, bioinformatics, biotechnology, food technology and theoretical biology. Candidates from agricultural science (such as genetics and plant breeding) and nutritional science backgrounds are also encouraged to apply.
Candidates funded through a valid fellowship like UGC/CSIR-NET JRF, DBT-JRF, ICMR-JRF, BINC, INSPIRE or other equivalent fellowships are strongly encouraged to apply.
Institute funded PhD student(s)
1. One institute funded PhD fellowship is available for students interested to work in the field of Membrane trafficking. Qualification: MS/M.Sc. in Life Sciences/ Physics/ Physical Chemistry with minimum 60% marks. Candidate must have qualified NET-LS/JGEEBILS/ GATE.
Desirable: A keen interest in cell biology and microscopy; experience in wet lab/ cell culture; basic knowledge of programming. Candidates should clearly mention their area of interest in their SOP.
2. One institute funded PhD fellowship is available for students interested to work in the area of fish behavioural ecology. Essential Qualification: a) MSc in Life Sciences/ Biotechnology/ Zoology, with minimum 55% marks.
b) Candidates need to have qualified NET-LS/JGEEBILS/GATE
c) Knowledge of basic statistics and mathematics; must have mathematics at the +2 level.
d) Experience working with model systems such as fish/birds/insects.
Additional experience (desirable): Candidates with prior experience of working in a behavioural ecology lab, especially working with fish would be preferred.

3. One institute funded PhD fellowship is available for students interested to work in Experimental Cell Biophysics/ Mechanobiology. Minimum Qualification: MS/M.Sc. in Life Sciences/ Physics/ Physical Chemistry with minimum 55% marks. Must have qualified NET-LS/JGEEBILS/GATE. Desirable: A keen interest in biology and microscopy; experience in wet lab/ cell culture; basic knowledge of programming. Candidates should clearly mention their area of interest in their SOP.
4. One Institute funded PhD fellowship is available for students who are interested in understanding the molecular mechanisms of Temperature-mediated regulation of plant growth and defense responses (biotic stress). Candidates with prior experience in molecular biology techniques and/or having worked with either model or crop plants are strongly encouraged to apply. Essential Qualification: MS/M.Sc./M.Tech in Life Sciences, M.Sc(Ag.) in Genetics & Plant Breeding/ Plant Biotechnology/Crop Physiology/Plant pathology with 55% marks or OGPA of 6.00/10. Candidates Must have qualified NET-LS/JGEEBILS/GATE etc. Desired Qualifications: Candidate should keen interest in Plant Molecular and Developmental Biology, Plant Genetics, Plant Immunology. Also, he/she should have keen interest in learning biochemical techniques such protein-protein and protein-DNA interactions, Chromatin-immunoprecipitation, and confocal microscopy. Candidates should clearly mention their area of interest in their SOP.
Project funded PhD student(s)
1. A project funded PhD position is available in the area of membrane protein trafficking Essential qualification: (A) M.Sc in Zoology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology. Minimum 60% marks throughout academic carrier. (B)Candidates need to have CSIR/UGC NET-LS. (3) Minimum 2 years of lab experience in eukaryotic cell biology and hands-on confocal microscopy. Desirable qualification: Microscopic image analysis and statistical calculations. The interested candidates should clearly mention their area of interest in their SOP.
2. A project funded PhD position is available in the area of computer simulations, molecular modelling, and statistical mechanics for biomolecular systems. Essential Qualification: M.Sc in Biotechnology/Physics/Chemistry with min. 55% marks. Candidates need to have CSIR/UGC NET-LS/valid GATE score/INSPIRE. Additional experience (desirable): Familiarity with computer simulations of biophysical systems. The interested candidates should clearly mention their area of interest in their SOP.
