Job Description

Prepare and arrange surgical instruments and supplies before procedures.

Assist surgeons during operations by providing instruments and maintaining a sterile field.

Monitor patients' vital signs and anesthesia effects during surgery.

Ensure adherence to infection control and sterilization protocols.

Maintain accurate surgical records and inventory of OT supplies.

Work closely with the surgical team for smooth operation flow.

Key Responsibilities

Pre-operative Care:
- Prepare patients for surgery by ensuring they are properly positioned, sterile, and comfortable.
- Confirm the patient’s identity, the type of surgery, and surgical site to avoid errors.
- Assist in preparing the operating room by checking that all surgical instruments and equipment are sterile and ready for use.
- Monitor the patient’s vital signs and ensure that the correct anesthesia is administered.
Intra-operative Care:
- Assist the surgeon and surgical team by providing necessary instruments, tools, or materials during the procedure.
- Ensure a sterile field is maintained at all times to prevent infections.
- Monitor the patient's condition throughout the surgery, including heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels.
- Maintain communication with other team members to coordinate the needs of the patient and surgical team.
Post-operative Care:
- Ensure that the patient is safely transferred to the recovery room once the surgery is complete.
- Monitor the patient's vital signs, pain levels, and overall condition after surgery.
- Educate the patient and family about post-surgery care, including wound care and signs of infection.
- Ensure that proper documentation of the surgery, recovery, and any complications is completed accurately.
Sterilization and Infection Control:
- Ensure that all instruments, equipment, and the operating room itself are sterile and free from contaminants.
- Follow infection control protocols to reduce the risk of surgical site infections.
- Dispose of used medical supplies and equipment in a safe and hygienic manner.
Assisting the Surgical Team:
- Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and the operating team during surgery, providing instruments and supplies as required.
- Maintain a sterile environment by constantly monitoring and maintaining proper protocols.
- Keep track of surgical instruments, making sure that nothing is left inside the patient’s body after the procedure.
Administrative and Documentation Duties:
- Complete necessary documentation, including patient records, surgical reports, and post-operative care instructions.
- Document any complications or unusual occurrences during the surgical procedure.
Patient Advocacy and Emotional Support:
- Ensure that the patient is mentally and emotionally prepared for the surgery.
- Provide comfort and reassurance to patients before and after the surgery.
- Advocate for the patient’s well-being during the surgical process.
