Job Summary
The ICU Consultant is a senior physician responsible for overseeing the clinical management of critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit. The role involves leading the ICU team in delivering high-quality, evidence-based care while ensuring patient safety, ethical standards, and medical compliance.
The ICU Consultant plays a key role in complex decision-making, patient monitoring, ventilator and life-support management, and multi-disciplinary coordination. This position demands strong leadership, expert clinical judgment, and a commitment to improving outcomes for the most vulnerable patients.
Key Responsibilities
1. Patient Care & Clinical Management

Lead the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of critically ill patients admitted to the ICU.

Develop and implement individualized treatment plans based on the latest clinical guidelines and protocols.

Manage mechanical ventilation, inotropes, dialysis support, sedation, pain control, and end-of-life care.

Monitor patient progress and modify treatment strategies accordingly.

Provide emergency care during acute deteriorations, including CPR and advanced life support.
2. Leadership & Team Coordination

Supervise and mentor ICU medical staff, including residents, junior doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals.

Participate in daily ICU rounds and multidisciplinary case discussions with surgeons, anesthetists, physicians, and support teams.

Ensure accurate handovers between shifts and maintain continuity of care.

Provide guidance in complex or ethically challenging clinical scenarios.
3. Communication & Family Liaison

Communicate clearly and empathetically with patients’ families regarding prognosis, treatment plans, and critical decisions.

Conduct family meetings to explain complex medical conditions, facilitate consent processes, and support shared decision-making.

Deliver bad news professionally and compassionately, when required.
4. Clinical Governance & Documentation

Maintain meticulous and timely medical records, care plans, and treatment documentation.

Ensure all medical interventions are appropriately recorded and comply with hospital policies and national standards.

Report and manage incidents, complications, or near-miss events in accordance with hospital protocols.
5. Protocol Development & Compliance
-
Develop, update, and implement ICU protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs) in alignment with evidence-based practices.

Ensure adherence to infection control, sedation, weaning, nutrition, and ICU discharge protocols.

Monitor and improve compliance with critical care bundles (e.g., sepsis, VAP, CLABSI, DVT prophylaxis).
6. Teaching, Research & Continuous Improvement

Contribute to the training and development of medical and nursing staff through teaching sessions, bedside teaching, and clinical workshops.

Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, and research activities within the ICU.

Encourage evidence-based practices and support journal clubs, case presentations, and academic discussions.
