Position Overview

A Junior Accountant plays a key role in assisting the finance and accounts department in maintaining accurate financial records, preparing reports, and ensuring compliance with accounting principles and regulations. This entry-level position is ideal for candidates looking to build a strong foundation in accounting, bookkeeping, and financial management.

The Junior Accountant supports senior accountants, finance managers, and auditors by performing day-to-day accounting activities such as ledger maintenance, accounts reconciliation, invoice processing, expense tracking, and basic financial analysis. While the role involves routine tasks, it also provides an opportunity to learn advanced accounting processes and develop expertise in financial systems.

Key Responsibilities

1. Financial Record Keeping

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date books of accounts.

  • Record daily financial transactions in the accounting system.

  • Ensure proper classification of income, expenses, assets, and liabilities.

  • Assist in maintaining general ledgers, subsidiary ledgers, and journals.

2. Accounts Payable & Receivable

  • Process supplier invoices and verify supporting documentation.

  • Maintain records of vendor payments and outstanding balances.

  • Prepare and send customer invoices in a timely manner.

  • Follow up on pending receivables and update payment status.

3. Bank and Ledger Reconciliation

  • Perform monthly bank reconciliations to match bank statements with company records.

  • Reconcile supplier and customer accounts to ensure accuracy.

  • Identify and resolve discrepancies in ledgers.

4. Expense Monitoring & Reporting

  • Track office and operational expenses.

  • Ensure all expenses are supported by proper bills and vouchers.

  • Prepare periodic expense reports for management review.

5. Support in Financial Statements

  • Assist in preparing balance sheets, profit & loss statements, and cash flow statements.

  • Provide data and schedules to senior accountants during audits.

  • Help in the preparation of tax returns and compliance reports.

6. Compliance & Documentation

  • Ensure transactions comply with company policies and accounting standards.

  • Maintain proper filing of all accounting records, vouchers, and receipts.

  • Support statutory and internal audits by providing necessary documents.

7. Coordination and Communication

  • Coordinate with other departments to collect financial data.

  • Communicate with vendors and clients regarding payment queries.

  • Collaborate with auditors, bankers, and tax consultants when needed.

Skills and Competencies

1. Technical Skills

  • Accounting Knowledge:

    • Basic understanding of accounting principles (GAAP/IFRS).

    • Knowledge of bookkeeping and ledger maintenance.

  • Software Skills:

    • Proficiency in MS Excel (formulas, pivot tables, data analysis).

    • Experience with accounting software such as Tally, QuickBooks, Zoho Books, or SAP.

  • Numerical Ability:

    • Accuracy in calculations and financial data entry.

  • Ability to identify discrepancies in accounts and propose corrective measures.
