Position Overview

The Kitchen Supervisor plays a vital leadership role in ensuring the smooth, efficient, and hygienic operation of the kitchen on a daily basis. This individual is responsible for supervising kitchen staff, maintaining quality control over food preparation and presentation, ensuring compliance with food safety regulations, managing inventory, and supporting cost-effective practices.

The Kitchen Supervisor serves as a bridge between the kitchen team and management, helping ensure that food is prepared to meet high standards in quality, taste, and presentation. This role requires excellent organizational, leadership, and communication skills, along with a strong understanding of culinary techniques, kitchen safety, and food cost control.

Key Responsibilities

1. Supervision and Staff Management

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the kitchen and food preparation areas.

  • Assign tasks and station responsibilities to cooks, prep staff, and kitchen assistants.

  • Monitor staff performance, provide feedback, and assist with on-the-job training and mentoring.

  • Ensure that all team members follow kitchen procedures, recipes, and safety protocols.

  • Address conflicts or issues among kitchen staff professionally and promptly.

2. Food Preparation and Quality Control

  • Ensure that all dishes leaving the kitchen meet established standards of quality, consistency, and presentation.

  • Monitor preparation times and kitchen efficiency to meet service requirements and reduce wait times.

  • Conduct regular taste tests and visual inspections of prepared food to maintain flavor and presentation standards.

  • Support line cooks and kitchen staff during peak hours or busy shifts, stepping in where needed.

3. Food Safety and Sanitation

  • Enforce food safety standards as per HACCP, local health department guidelines, and company policies.

  • Maintain cleanliness of kitchen equipment, work surfaces, and food storage areas.

  • Ensure proper food storage, labeling, and rotation using the FIFO (First In, First Out) method.

  • Oversee proper hygiene practices among staff, including handwashing, glove use, and uniform compliance.

  • Schedule and document regular deep cleaning and sanitation procedures.

4. Inventory Management

  • Monitor stock levels of ingredients, supplies, and equipment.

  • Conduct regular inventory checks and place orders to avoid shortages or overstocking.

  • Ensure proper receipt, storage, and usage of kitchen supplies.

  • Track waste and spoilage, identifying patterns to reduce unnecessary loss.

5. Cost Control and Efficiency

  • Work with management or the executive chef to control food costs through portion control, inventory accuracy, and minimizing waste.

  • Suggest improvements in prep processes to save time and reduce resource usage.

  • Support in maintaining budgetary targets by optimizing staffing schedules and monitoring overtime.

6. Communication and Coordination

  • Coordinate with front-of-house staff and servers to ensure smooth food delivery and timely service.

  • Communicate effectively with the Head Chef or Kitchen Manager regarding menu changes, special dietary requests, or supply issues.

  • Report equipment breakdowns or maintenance needs promptly to avoid service disruptions.

7. Training and Development

  • Assist in onboarding and training new kitchen staff.

  • Help develop and reinforce standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all kitchen operations.

  • Promote a culture of teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.
