Job Description
Wirestork is expanding its Middle east legal coverage, and we're looking for a legal writer and a freelance personal finance columnist to join our team.
- The legal methodology writer will be responsible for a mix of short, news-driven items (Impacts of the UAE bankruptcy law) and longer features about legal economic issues and trends (' Bad Debts at banks threaten economic Outlook').
- We define legal economics broadly at wirestork.
- Experience covering economics or some related beat is preferred; a proven ability to pick up new subjects quickly is a must.
- This is a job for a reporter; if your first instinct when you come across a new subject is to pick up the phone, this position could be right for you.
- Advanced data skills are not required, but candidates should have a solid knowledge of Excel or similar programs and be comfortable writing about and evaluating statistical arguments.
- The package does not offer benefits.
- The personal finance columnist will write a regular feature on topics such as saving, investing, managing debt and paying for college (schedule and frequency to be determined).
- We're looking for someone who can think creatively about what a personal finance column can be; we don't want every column to be a twist on, 'Invest in low-fee index funds.' This column will target a broad audience, so an ability to connect with readers who aren't directly affected by the subject being discussed is essential.
- Successful candidates will have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in business writing.
- They will have excellent writing skills and superior grammar, will adhere to wirestork's writing style guide, be able to understand, translate and simplify complex industry jargon, and also be skilled in interviewing and storytelling.
- This position is mostly work-from-home, with some time on site for team meetings and interviews.
- Bloggers with posting opportunities in niche websites/magazines and law students are encouraged to apply.

We realized that millions of people risk becoming powerless when faced with land disputes, crime, divorce, consumer problems, unfair dismissal, disagreements with a neighbor or landlord, grievance with a public authority, or a business/contractual conflict. In many instances, people simply cannot afford a lawyer or legal services. As such they may experience the law as a tool for the lucky few to maintain their monopoly on power, or to increase their power at the expense of the vulnerable and the many. And for those who do have the resources to access legal advice in the courts, justice procedures do not always deliver what they promise: procedures may be outdated, formalistic or unduly slow.
