A Linux/Unix Administrator is responsible for installing, configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting Linux and Unix operating systems on servers, ensuring optimal system performance, security, and availability by monitoring system health, managing user access, implementing updates, performing backups, and resolving technical issues as they arise, often collaborating with other IT teams to support business operations.

Key Responsibilities:
1. System Administration & Maintenance
- Install, configure, and maintain Linux/Unix servers (RHEL, CentOS, Ubuntu, Debian, Solaris, etc.).
- Monitor system performance, availability, and resource utilization.
- Perform OS patching, updates, and security enhancements.
- Manage system logs, backups, and disaster recovery planning.
- Automate routine tasks using shell scripting, Ansible, Puppet, or similar tools.
2. Security & Compliance
- Implement and maintain security best practices for user access control, file permissions, and network security.
- Perform system hardening and vulnerability patching.
- Configure and manage firewalls (iptables, firewalld, UFW).
- Monitor and mitigate security threats and unauthorized access attempts.
3. Storage & File System Management
- Manage file systems, partitions, and disk storage (LVM, RAID, NFS, SAN, NAS).
- Ensure proper backup and disaster recovery procedures are in place.
- Optimize storage performance and resolve disk space issues.
4. Networking & Server Management
- Configure and troubleshoot network services (DNS, DHCP, FTP, SSH, SMTP, VPN, etc.).
- Manage network configurations, IP assignments, and firewall rules.
- Optimize system performance through tuning and troubleshooting.
5. Application & Database Support
- Deploy and manage enterprise applications on Linux/Unix environments.
- Support database systems such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, or MongoDB.
- Work with developers to optimize application performance.
6. Virtualization & Cloud Support
- Deploy and manage virtual machines using VMware, KVM, or Proxmox.
- Support cloud-based environments (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
- Implement containerization using Docker and orchestration tools like Kubernetes.
7. Documentation & User Support
- Create and maintain system documentation, SOPs, and technical manuals.
- Provide support and training to users and developers on Linux/Unix systems.
- Work closely with IT teams to resolve system-related issues.
