The Government of India Act 1935 which envisaged a federal type of Government, gave more powers to the Central and State Legislatures, and the control and interference of the Governor-General and the Governors were, to some extent reduced. In Maharashtra, the Legislative Council, as understood today as an Upper Chamber, came to be established for the first time only after the Government of India Act, 1935, came into force. The Maharastra Legislature is bicameral consisting of a Legislative Council and a Legislative Assembly. The present strength of the Legislative Council is 78 members. It is a continuous House and not subject to dissolution. However, one-third of its members retire every second year and are replaced by new members.
