Mechanical CAD Designer
Job Description
Key Responsibilities:
1. CAD Modeling and Drafting:
-
Create accurate 2D drawings and 3D models of mechanical parts, assemblies, and systems using CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor, CATIA, or CREO).

Convert conceptual sketches or verbal instructions into technical drawings that are ready for prototyping or production.
-
Prepare fabrication, assembly, and installation drawings with appropriate dimensions, tolerances, material specifications, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).

Develop and maintain a library of standard parts, templates, and drawing formats in line with company and industry standards.
2. Collaboration with Engineering Teams:
-
Work closely with mechanical engineers and project leads to understand design intent, functional requirements, and performance goals.

Support the product development lifecycle from concept through design, prototyping, testing, and production.

Participate in design reviews, offering input on manufacturability, design efficiency, and material selection.

Modify and revise existing designs to incorporate design changes, feedback, or performance improvements.
3. Design Documentation and BOM Preparation:

Prepare detailed Bill of Materials (BOMs) for assemblies and ensure alignment with design specifications.

Document design iterations and revisions in a structured and traceable format using Product Data Management (PDM) or PLM tools.

Ensure that all documentation adheres to ISO, ASME, or company-specific drawing standards and quality requirements.
4. Prototyping and Testing Support:
-
Assist in developing prototype models and support functional testing as required.

Update designs based on test results, feedback from technicians, or customer requirements.

Ensure that prototypes reflect the final design intent and are compatible with manufacturing processes such as machining, casting, or 3D printing.
5. Design Optimization and Innovation:
-
Identify opportunities to improve design efficiency, reduce material usage, or enhance mechanical performance.
-
Research new materials, manufacturing techniques, and CAD tools to improve design output.

Use simulation or analysis tools (e.g., FEA, CFD) in collaboration with engineers to validate design integrity under stress, heat, or load conditions.
6. File Management and Communication:
-
Maintain organized project files, design history, and revision logs.
-
Share design files with internal teams and vendors, ensuring data integrity and version control.
-
Communicate effectively with manufacturing, procurement, and quality control departments to resolve design-related queries.
