Job Location: Baltikuri, Howrah and Kalyani/ Nadia.
Persons must have knowledge about NABL Lab and should be capable of maintaining all NABL documentations. They should be from such a location that they can go to Kalyani everyday without trouble.
A metallurgist working in an NABL-accredited lab within an iron and steel manufacturing company has a critical role that combines technical metallurgical analysis with rigorous quality assurance and compliance. This position involves overseeing the lab's operations, performing material testing, and ensuring all procedures meet the high standards set by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL).
Primary responsibilities
Laboratory management and quality assurance
Maintain NABL standards: Ensure the laboratory's quality management system (QMS) and test methods adhere to the ISO/IEC 17025 standards mandated by NABL.
Manage lab operations: Oversee all day-to-day activities, including staffing, scheduling, equipment calibration and maintenance, and laboratory safety protocols.
Documentation and reporting: Maintain detailed, accurate records of all tests, procedures, and findings. Prepare and present technical reports to both internal and external stakeholders.
Internal and external audits: Prepare for and participate in both internal quality audits and external NABL surveillance and re-assessments.
Metallurgical testing and analysis
Materials testing: Conduct and supervise a wide range of destructive and non-destructive tests on steel products. This includes hardness, tensile, and impact testing.
Chemical analysis: Utilize lab equipment, such as a spectrometer and carbon-sulfur (CS) analyzer, to determine the chemical composition of raw materials and finished products.
Microstructure analysis: Perform metallography by preparing samples and examining their microstructure to assess the effectiveness of heat treatment processes and ensure product quality.
Corrosion and coating analysis: Test for corrosion resistance and evaluate the thickness and quality of coatings on galvanized or finished iron products.
Process improvement and failure analysis
Failure investigation: Conduct root cause analysis on product failures or defects to determine if they are related to metallurgical issues. Recommend corrective and preventive actions.
Process optimization: Collaborate with production teams to improve manufacturing processes, such as the steel melting, casting, and heat treatment cycles, to enhance quality and yield.
Material selection: Provide technical advice on the suitability of specific metals for different applications and assist in the evaluation of new raw materials.
Research and development (R&D): Assist in the development of new alloys or steel grades by conducting metallurgical trials and tests.
Essential skills and qualifications
Education: A bachelor's or master's degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science, or a related field.
Accreditation experience: Proven experience working in a lab with NABL (or ISO/IEC 17025) accreditation.
Technical expertise: Hands-on experience with metallurgical testing instruments, sample preparation techniques, and various testing standards (e.g., ASTM, ISO).
Soft skills: Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with an attention to detail.
