Operations and Maintenance Operator
Job Description
An Operations and Maintenance Operator (O&M Operator) in the water treatment industry is responsible for the overall operational efficiency and maintenance of water and wastewater treatment facilities. Their duties include monitoring plant performance, troubleshooting issues, managing staff, ensuring regulatory compliance, and optimizing treatment processes. Essentially, they ensure the reliable and safe supply of potable water and the proper treatment of wastewater.
Key Responsibilities
1. Plant Operations

Operate and monitor various units of the water treatment process such as:
-
Filtration systems (sand/carbon/pressure filters)
-
Reverse Osmosis (RO) units
-
Softener plants
-
Effluent/Sewage Treatment Plants (ETP/STP)
-

Monitor flow rates, pressure levels, chemical dosing, pH, conductivity, and other quality parameters.

Start, stop, and adjust pumps, blowers, and valves as required.

Maintain logbooks of daily readings, shift reports, and plant observations.
2. Routine Maintenance
-
Perform basic preventive maintenance like cleaning strainers, lubricating equipment, replacing worn-out parts, and checking connections.

Assist maintenance teams in breakdowns, repairs, and overhauls of motors, pumps, and piping systems.

Maintain cleanliness of plant equipment, chemical tanks, and operating areas.
3. Water Quality Monitoring
-
Conduct on-site water quality testing such as pH, TDS, turbidity, chlorine residuals, and DO levels.

Report deviations in treated water quality and help take corrective action.

Ensure treated water meets environmental and client-specific standards.
4. Chemical Handling & Dosing
-
Prepare and dose chemicals such as coagulants, chlorine, antiscalants, lime, and alum as per process requirements.

Monitor chemical consumption and report stock levels for reordering.

Follow proper safety protocols while handling and storing chemicals.
5. System Monitoring & Reporting
-
Record operational parameters in prescribed formats or software.
-
Report abnormalities, equipment malfunctions, or utility issues to the supervisor immediately.

Coordinate with service engineers or contractors during AMC visits or system upgrades.
6. Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Compliance
-
Follow all HSE policies and wear appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).

Ensure chemical storage and disposal is done safely and in compliance with environmental standards.

Report near-miss or safety incidents promptly.
