OT Assistant
Job Description
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Pre-Operative Preparation
-
Assist in preparing the operation theatre before each surgery.
-
Arrange surgical instruments, equipment, and materials in order.
-
Check and confirm the availability and functionality of all surgical tools.
-
Ensure proper sterilization of instruments and drapes.
-
Prepare and stock the OT with necessary supplies like gloves, gowns, masks, and sterile solutions.
2. Patient Preparation
-
Help transport patients from wards to the operation theatre.
-
Assist in positioning the patient on the operating table as per surgeon’s instructions.
-
Ensure the patient’s comfort while adhering to safety protocols.
-
Assist in prepping the surgical site, such as shaving or cleaning the area as instructed.
3. Intra-Operative Assistance
-
Pass surgical instruments and materials to surgeons and nurses during operations.
-
Operate and handle suction devices, lights, and other OT equipment.
-
Maintain a sterile environment throughout the procedure.
-
Assist in counting surgical instruments and sponges to avoid retention inside the patient.
-
Help monitor patient’s condition under the guidance of medical staff.
4. Post-Operative Duties
-
Assist in shifting patients safely to the recovery room or ICU.
-
Help in cleaning and disinfecting the operation theatre after each procedure.
-
Dispose of biohazard waste according to hospital protocols.
-
Restock supplies and ensure equipment is ready for the next surgery.
5. Equipment and Inventory Management
-
Maintain records of surgical instruments, consumables, and OT inventory.
-
Report any malfunctioning equipment to the biomedical team.
-
Ensure timely replenishment of sterile and non-sterile supplies.
6. Documentation and Coordination
-
Assist in maintaining surgical logs, patient details, and procedure notes.
-
Coordinate with nursing staff, anesthesiologists, and surgeons to ensure smooth workflow.
-
Follow all hospital protocols related to infection control and patient safety.

Ability to operate suction machines, cautery devices, and lighting systems.
