Job Description
Job Summary:
We are seeking a detail-oriented, technically skilled, and experienced Relay Testing Engineer to join our electrical engineering team. The primary role of this position is to conduct comprehensive testing, calibration, troubleshooting, and maintenance of protective relays and associated control and protection systems in electrical installations. The ideal candidate will play a critical role in ensuring that power systems operate safely, efficiently, and without interruption by verifying that protective relays function as designed under both normal and fault conditions.
Relay testing is essential in power plants, substations, and large-scale industrial facilities to protect critical infrastructure from overcurrent, overvoltage, short circuits, and other electrical faults. The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out field and laboratory testing using modern test equipment and should have a strong understanding of electrical protection principles, testing standards, and relay coordination.
Key Responsibilities:

Perform functional and operational testing of various types of protective relays, including but not limited to overcurrent, differential, distance, earth fault, voltage, frequency, and directional relays.

Conduct secondary injection testing using relay test sets to simulate fault conditions and verify the performance of relays and trip circuits.

Perform primary injection testing when necessary, to test current transformers (CTs), circuit breakers, and the overall protection system.

Calibrate relays and ensure settings are accurately programmed as per protection coordination studies or approved design specifications.

Maintain detailed documentation of all test results, relay settings, and maintenance activities for compliance and audit purposes.

Analyze test results and prepare technical reports with recommendations for improvements or corrective actions where required.

Coordinate with engineers, site supervisors, and commissioning teams to carry out relay testing during installation, maintenance, or shutdown periods.

Troubleshoot and repair faulty relay systems and associated protection/control panels when irregularities are detected.

Verify interlocking and logic circuits related to protection systems using control schematics and wiring diagrams.

Ensure that all work is conducted in accordance with national and international standards such as IEC, IEEE, and NETA, as well as client specifications and safety regulations.

Participate in commissioning of new electrical installations, ensuring that all relays and protection systems are tested and ready for operation.

Support routine preventive maintenance programs for electrical protection systems to reduce the risk of system failure.

Provide technical input during protection scheme design, relay setting calculations, and equipment selection if required.
