Tenure : The tenure of Research Associates may be decided by the Institute as per overall sanctions available to them for this purpose. Such appointments will be for a period of one (01) year with the possibility of extension for one (01)* more year.
Associatship : (a) Rs. 36, 000/- PM for RA-1 + HRA (b) Rs.32, 000/- PM, for scholars who have submitted Ph.D. thesis and are yet to receive their Ph.D degree (provisional or otherwise) + HRA (c) Rs 38,000/- PM for RA-2+ HRA

The Institute was founded in 1950 by Professor Meghnad Saha as a part of University of Calcutta. At that time, it was called the "Institute of Nuclear Physics", with Professor Meghnad Saha the founding director. In the beginning, research was mainly directed towards Nuclear Physics, which was an emerging field at that time and also Biophysical Sciences
