Senior Cable Engineer
Job Description
We are seeking a highly experienced and technically proficient Senior Cable Engineer to join our engineering team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the planning, design, installation, testing, and maintenance of power and/or telecommunications cable systems. This role involves leadership in project execution, technical guidance, quality assurance, and cross-functional collaboration to ensure cable infrastructure meets the highest standards of performance, safety, and regulatory compliance.
Position Overview:
The Senior Cable Engineer oversees the end-to-end lifecycle of underground, overhead, or submarine cable systems—ranging from high-voltage power transmission cables to fiber optic or communication cables. The role includes site evaluations, system design, technical analysis, material selection, supervision of installation activities, and ensuring long-term cable system reliability. As a senior-level position, the candidate is also expected to mentor junior engineers and coordinate with contractors, clients, and regulatory bodies.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Project Design and Engineering

Design cable routes and systems for power distribution, transmission, or data communications in accordance with client specifications and industry standards (e.g., IEC, IEEE, NEC, BS).

Perform technical calculations for cable sizing, load analysis, voltage drop, thermal performance, and fault current capacity.

Select appropriate cable types (XLPE, PILC, fiber optic, coaxial, etc.) and accessories (joints, terminations, trays, ducts, and supports).

Create and review detailed engineering drawings, layout plans, and schematics using AutoCAD or relevant software.

Prepare bill of materials (BOM), cost estimates, and technical reports.
2. Project Execution and Supervision

Lead or supervise on-site cable installation activities, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and engineering best practices.

Conduct cable laying in trenches, ducts, trays, or aerial structures, including pulling, jointing, termination, and protection.

Oversee testing procedures such as insulation resistance, Hi-Pot, sheath testing, OTDR (for fiber optics), and commissioning.

Coordinate with civil, electrical, and IT teams to ensure project timelines and specifications are met.
3. Quality Control and Assurance

Perform technical inspections of cable installations to ensure compliance with design specifications and regulatory standards.

Approve or reject materials based on quality and specification criteria.

Maintain proper documentation for inspections, approvals, as-built drawings, and test results.

Support root cause analysis in the event of cable faults or system failures and recommend remedial actions.
4. Regulatory and Safety Compliance

Ensure that all cable installations follow relevant local and international standards and health and safety regulations.

Participate in risk assessments, method statements, and permit-to-work processes.

Stay updated with evolving cable technologies, industry codes, and regulatory frameworks.
5. Team Leadership and Coordination

Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians.

Collaborate with project managers, clients, vendors, and third-party contractors.

Conduct training sessions on cable system design, installation, and testing.

Participate in tendering processes, vendor evaluations, and technical negotiations.
