Job Description

About Center For Criminology & Public Policy, India
The Center For Criminology & Public Policy is India's first-of-its-kind research and knowledge agency on crime and criminal justice. We seek to reduce crime and promote justice by fostering the use of evidence-based criminological research in policymaking and practice.

The founding premise behind the center is this: if criminology is to survive and thrive, it can only do so by contributing to a better politics of crime. This means, expanding the influence of criminological knowledge in the policy-making spheres, and reclaiming criminology's purpose for the public. The main goal of the Center is to enhance the understanding of costs, benefits, and consequences of criminal justice policies among those responsible for governmental actions. Our scholarship is driven by empirical, evidence-based evaluation of crime and its control.

The Women and Crime Network (WCN) of the Center for Criminology and Public Policy, India, in collaboration with Counter Trafficking Group, US, is conducting a crime victimization survey in four metro cities of India namely, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, and Kolkata. The survey, which is set to begin from November 30, 2020, will be administered to persons aged 12 or more from a regionally representative sample of households in each of the four cities. As part of the survey, the investigators will also gather data from publically accessible data sources and use them for doing ethnographic fieldwork.

The broad objectives of the survey are to identify the biggest hotspots of crimes against women and children, to understand the significance of those hotspots in terms of criminal opportunities, and to determine the impact of those hotspots on the safety perceptions of the citizens, including the behavioral changes they made to avoid crime.

Nevertheless, since administering crime surveys is a monumental task, and that success of such surveys is largely dependent on volunteers, the Center is considering inviting women and men volunteers - from criminology, psychology, sociology, social work, law, women studies, and other related backgrounds - to participate in this exercise and provide us with practical support and services.

Ideally, the volunteers must be willing to commit a minimum of 5 days (10 hours/day), starting from 01 December 2020. As an incentive for participation, each volunteer shall be awarded a certificate, and their names would be acknowledged in the ensuing report. During the survey, volunteers will be dispensed PPE kits including masks, sanitizers, and hand gloves as a safeguard against COVID-19. Those willing to do a 7-day internship with the Center as part of their curriculum may consider seizing this opportunity and use it for their practical enrichment. Such candidates will be given an additional certificate.

The minimum age required to be eligible for volunteering is 18 years. Selected candidates will be invited for a Google Meet for an initial orientation and thereafter, they'd be asked to assemble for a final on-ground orientation in the last week of November.

Those interested in participating in the survey to be held in Delhi, please express your interest to be part of the fieldwork. The research team will be conducting the survey in Delhi from 30th November to 8th December and in Mumbai from 26th December to 3 January.

Please treat this message urgently. We look forward to your participation.
