Roles and Responsibilities of a Desktop Support Engineer
A Desktop Support Engineer is responsible for providing technical support to end users, maintaining computer systems, and ensuring smooth IT operations within an organization.
1. End-User Support
Provide first-level and second-level technical support to users.
Troubleshoot hardware, software, and network-related issues.
Resolve incidents through phone, email, remote access, or in-person support.
Assist users with operating systems, applications, and peripheral devices.
2. Hardware Management
Install, configure, and maintain desktops, laptops, printers, scanners, and other IT equipment.
Diagnose and repair hardware faults.
Coordinate warranty claims and hardware replacements.
Maintain inventory of IT assets.
3. Software Installation and Maintenance
Install, upgrade, and configure operating systems (Windows, macOS, Linux).
Deploy and maintain business applications and productivity tools.
Apply software patches, updates, and security fixes.
Troubleshoot application-related issues.
4. Network and Connectivity Support
Configure network settings, Wi-Fi, VPN, and internet connectivity.
Troubleshoot LAN/WAN connectivity issues.
Support network printers and shared resources.
Coordinate with network teams for escalated issues.
5. User Account Administration
Create, modify, and disable user accounts.
Manage password resets and account unlocks.
Support directory services such as Microsoft Active Directory.
Configure email accounts and access permissions.
6. Incident and Service Request Management
Log, track, and resolve tickets using ITSM tools.
Meet Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
Escalate unresolved issues to appropriate teams.
Document troubleshooting steps and resolutions.
7. Security and Compliance
Install and monitor antivirus and endpoint security solutions.
Ensure compliance with company IT policies.
Assist in data backup and recovery procedures.
Support security audits and vulnerability remediation.
8. System Maintenance
Perform routine system health checks.
Monitor workstation performance and storage utilization.
Maintain system documentation and asset records.
Support operating system migrations and upgrades.
9. Remote Support
Provide technical assistance to remote users.
Configure and support remote access tools.
Troubleshoot VPN and remote connectivity issues.
