Wire Electrical Discharge Machining Operator
Job Description
Key Responsibilities
1. Machine Setup and Operation
-
Operate and monitor wire EDM machines (e.g., Mitsubishi, Sodick, Makino, Fanuc, AgieCharmilles) in a safe and efficient manner.
-
Set up machines using proper tooling, fixtures, and work holding devices as per the job requirements.

Load programs and input machine parameters such as wire feed rate, voltage, and flushing pressure.
-
Conduct test runs to verify the machine setup and ensure part dimensions meet specifications.
2. Programming and Technical Operations
-
Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, CAD files, and job orders to determine machining requirements.
-
Make necessary edits to existing CNC programs or create simple programs on the machine control panel.
-
Utilize CAM software (such as Mastercam, Esprit, or AutoCAD) to generate or modify wire EDM paths, if required.
-
Optimize cutting parameters based on material type (steel, aluminum, carbide, etc.) and job complexity to ensure high accuracy and surface finish.
3. Quality Control and Inspection
-
Measure finished parts using precision instruments such as micrometers, calipers, height gauges, profile projectors, and CMMs.

Verify part dimensions and tolerances against technical drawings and customer specifications.

Maintain documentation of inspection reports and quality checklists.

Report any dimensional discrepancies or equipment malfunctions to the supervisor immediately.
4. Maintenance and Housekeeping
-
Perform routine maintenance on EDM machines, including wire threading, dielectric fluid checks, and cleaning of filters and nozzles.
-
Ensure machine tools and workstations are clean, organized, and free from safety hazards.

Follow preventive maintenance schedules and maintain proper records.
-
Report major mechanical or electrical issues for service or repair.
5. Documentation and Reporting
-
Record production data such as quantities produced, cycle times, and tool usage.

Update work orders, process sheets, and daily shift reports accurately.
-
Participate in production planning and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
6. Safety and Compliance
-
Adhere strictly to company safety standards and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
-
Handle tools, sharp wires, and components with caution to prevent injury or damage.
-
Comply with environmental, health, and safety (EHS) regulations and company policies.
-
Participate in safety drills, toolbox talks, and training sessions as required.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in operating Wire EDM machines, understanding technical drawings and specifications, and potentially experience with CAD/CAM software.

Strong understanding of electrical discharge machining processes and principles.

Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and technical specifications.
-
Familiarity with CNC controls, G-code, and CAM software.

Knowledge of various metals and alloys used in precision machining.

Proficiency in using precision measuring instruments.
