Job Description
- Performing laboratory experiments used to diagnose and treat illnesses.
- Supervise biological technicians and their work to evaluate the accuracy of their results.
- Isolate bacteria and other microorganism cultures for future study.
- Classify microorganisms found in collected specimens for future reference.
- Monitor the effects of microorganisms on animals, plants and the environment.
- Research the findings of other scientists and attend conferences to stay up-to-date.
- Publish research papers and technical reports of your findings.
- Present findings to other scientists, engineers, executives and the public.
Key Responsibilities
1. Sample Collection and Handling
-
Collect, label, and prepare samples (e.g., water, food, air, raw materials, swabs) for microbiological testing.

Follow proper aseptic techniques to avoid cross-contamination.

Assist with transporting and storing samples under proper conditions to maintain integrity.
2. Microbiological Testing
-
Conduct basic microbiological tests such as total plate count, coliform testing, yeast and mold count, and other standardized assays.

Prepare culture media, reagents, and necessary laboratory materials as per SOPs.
-
Inoculate, incubate, and monitor microbial growth on different types of media.
3. Laboratory Support Activities
-
Clean, disinfect, and sterilize lab instruments, glassware, and work surfaces before and after experiments.

Maintain accurate and detailed records of observations, test results, and experimental data.

Assist in the calibration and maintenance of lab equipment (e.g., autoclaves, incubators, laminar flow cabinets).
4. Documentation & Compliance
-
Accurately document test procedures and results in lab notebooks or electronic systems.
-
Ensure all lab activities comply with safety protocols, good laboratory practices (GLP), and quality standards (GMP, ISO, or HACCP as applicable).

Follow guidelines for safe disposal of biological and chemical waste.
5. Collaboration and Learning

Work under the guidance of senior microbiologists or lab managers to learn advanced microbiological techniques.

Participate in training sessions and workshops to build technical expertise.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams such as Quality Assurance, Production, and R&D depending on the industry sector.
