Job Description

Overview:

A House Nurse is a healthcare professional who provides personalized, one-on-one care to individuals in their home. Also known as a Private Nurse or Home Care Nurse, this role involves offering medical support to patients who require ongoing care but prefer to receive it at home rather than in a hospital or clinic setting. House Nurses typically work with elderly patients, individuals with chronic conditions, post-surgical recovery patients, or those who need assistance with daily activities and medications.

The primary goal of a House Nurse is to ensure the patient’s well-being, recovery, and comfort in their own home. The responsibilities range from administering medications and monitoring health conditions to providing emotional support for both the patient and their family members. The House Nurse must work closely with other healthcare professionals, including doctors, therapists, and caregivers, to provide comprehensive care.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Patient Care and Monitoring:

    • Monitor the patient’s vital signs (e.g., blood pressure, heart rate, temperature) regularly and report changes to the physician.

    • Administer prescribed medications, treatments, and injections according to the healthcare plan.

    • Observe the patient’s physical and emotional condition, documenting any changes or concerns.

    • Help patients with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and eating, as necessary.

    • Assist with mobility and provide support for patients with limited movement or those who use mobility aids like wheelchairs.

    • Perform wound care, including dressing changes, cleaning, and ensuring proper hygiene for post-surgical or injured patients.

  2. Health Assessments and Care Plans:

    • Conduct regular health assessments and screenings to detect early signs of health deterioration.

    • Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare providers to develop and adjust the patient's care plan based on their evolving health needs.

    • Provide detailed updates to family members or caregivers about the patient’s condition, progress, and any necessary changes to care plans.

  3. Medication Management:

    • Ensure that patients take medications as prescribed, monitoring for any side effects or allergic reactions.

    • Organize and manage medication schedules to ensure patients do not miss doses.

    • Educate patients and family members on the proper use of medications, including potential side effects, precautions, and how to store them.

  4. Post-Surgical Care and Rehabilitation Support:

    • Provide support during the post-surgery recovery period by following instructions given by the doctor.

    • Assist with physical therapy exercises, rehabilitation activities, or other activities designed to help the patient regain their independence.

    • Monitor for any signs of complications such as infection, blood clots, or unexpected pain.

    • Encourage mobility and exercise within the limitations of the patient’s condition to prevent muscle atrophy and improve recovery.

  5. Infection Control and Hygiene:

    • Follow infection control protocols to prevent cross-contamination and ensure a clean, safe environment for the patient.

    • Educate the patient and family on how to maintain a sanitary home environment, especially if the patient has a weakened immune system.

    • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when providing care, especially for patients with compromised immune systems or infectious conditions.

  6. Psychological and Emotional Support:

    • Provide emotional support and comfort to the patient, particularly those who may be dealing with anxiety, depression, or frustration due to their illness or injury.

    • Offer companionship to reduce feelings of isolation and improve the patient’s mental well-being.

    • Help family members understand the patient’s condition and offer advice on how to manage caregiving responsibilities.

  7. Health Education and Training:

    • Educate patients and their families about the patient’s health condition, care routine, and necessary lifestyle adjustments (such as diet, exercise, and safety).

    • Teach family members or caregivers how to assist with medical procedures, such as administering injections, using medical equipment (e.g., oxygen machines), or performing specific exercises.

    • Provide information about healthy living practices, including proper nutrition and preventing the development of secondary health issues (e.g., bedsores, infections).

  8. Administrative and Documentation Tasks:

    • Maintain accurate records of the patient’s condition, treatments, medications, and any changes in their health.

    • Document all interactions, care provided, and observations in the patient’s file, ensuring it complies with healthcare regulations and confidentiality standards.

    • Communicate regularly with the patient’s healthcare team to update them on progress, complications, or any adjustments to the care plan.

  9. Emergency Care:

    • Provide first aid or emergency medical care if the patient experiences a sudden medical emergency, such as a heart attack, stroke, or respiratory distress.

    • Know how to respond to emergencies, including performing CPR if needed and calling emergency services if necessary.

Skills and Qualifications:

  1. Essential Skills:

    • Clinical Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of healthcare practices, including wound care, medication administration, and patient monitoring.

    • Patient Care Skills: Ability to assist with daily living activities and provide compassionate, patient-centered care.

    • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with patients, family members, and healthcare teams.

    • Empathy and Compassion: A deep sense of empathy and the ability to handle sensitive situations with care and understanding.

    • Problem Solving: Ability to detect changes in a patient’s health and take appropriate action, whether by adjusting the care plan or seeking medical assistance.

    • Time Management: Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple care duties efficiently, especially in cases with more than one patient.

  2. Technical Skills:

    • Proficiency in using medical equipment such as blood pressure monitors, thermometers, glucose meters, and oxygen tanks.

    • Ability to administer injections and manage intravenous (IV) fluids if required.

    • Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) systems for documenting patient progress and medical history.

    • Knowledge of infection control protocols, hygiene practices, and safety procedures.
