Job Description
Job Summary:
A Metallurgist is a specialist in the science and technology of metals. This professional is responsible for studying the properties, behavior, and performance of metallic materials under various conditions to improve their strength, durability, efficiency, and application. Metallurgists work with engineers, production teams, researchers, and quality control departments to develop new materials, improve manufacturing processes, solve material failures, and ensure compliance with industry standards.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Metallurgical Analysis & Testing

Conduct tests to determine the physical and chemical properties of metals and alloys (e.g., hardness, tensile strength, corrosion resistance, fatigue behavior).

Analyze microstructures using advanced techniques like optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD).

Perform failure analysis to investigate causes of material defects, fractures, or performance issues in components or structures.

Evaluate heat treatment and material processing methods and their effects on metal properties.
2. Research & Development

Assist in the development of new metal materials, alloys, and composites for specific industrial applications.

Contribute to process optimization by identifying alternative materials or methods that increase performance, reduce costs, or lower environmental impact.

Collaborate with R&D teams to enhance product design through material selection and metallurgy-based engineering solutions.
3. Production & Process Support

Provide technical support to production lines and shop floor operations regarding metal forming, casting, forging, rolling, and heat treatment.

Monitor and refine metallurgical processes to improve yield, product quality, and process efficiency.

Troubleshoot process-related problems involving metal defects, equipment inconsistencies, or temperature variations.
4. Quality Assurance & Compliance

Ensure that metallurgical standards, safety procedures, and quality control practices are strictly followed.

Review material specifications and certify that raw materials, semi-finished, and finished products meet regulatory and customer requirements.

Assist in developing and updating standard operating procedures (SOPs), inspection criteria, and testing protocols for metallurgy-related operations.
5. Documentation & Reporting

Prepare detailed technical reports based on metallurgical tests, research findings, failure investigations, and quality audits.

Maintain accurate lab records, production logs, and calibration records of testing equipment.

Communicate findings and recommendations clearly to cross-functional teams, clients, or regulatory bodies.
6. Technical Support & Collaboration

Advise design engineers and clients on appropriate material choices for specific projects or products.

Support procurement and supplier qualification by reviewing material certificates, test reports, and conducting audits.

Liaise with external testing labs, standards organizations, or academic institutions for collaborative research or benchmarking.
