On completion-of the building at Regent Park and appointment of remaining staff the institute under the name of Jute Technological Research Laboratories was officially opened on 3 January, 1939 by Lord Linlitligow. The then viceroy and Governor-General of India. The occasion was also graced by the Governor of Bengal. Mr. C.R. Nodder was appointed the first Director of the institute. Later on, with the passage of time the institute flourished with multifarious dimensions leading to the centralised administrative control under the auspices of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research as a constituent unit.
