Job Description
Job Title: Smart Meter Installation Technician
Role Overview
The technician is responsible for installing, testing, commissioning, and maintaining smart electricity meters at consumer premises. The role involves fieldwork, technical handling of electrical systems, and ensuring safe and accurate meter deployment.
Key Responsibilities
1. Installation of Smart Meters
Install smart electricity meters at residential, commercial, and industrial sites.
Replace old/conventional meters with new smart meters.
Ensure proper wiring, mounting, and connectivity.
2. Testing & Commissioning
Perform initial testing after installation.
Verify meter functionality, communication signals, and accuracy.
Ensure meter is properly connected to communication networks (RF/GPRS/PLC).
3. Site Inspection
Check site readiness before installation.
Identify electrical faults, wiring issues, or safety risks.
Ensure proper earthing and load conditions.
4. Troubleshooting & Maintenance
Diagnose and fix issues such as:
No display or power in meter
Communication failure
Incorrect readings
Replace defective meters when required.
5. Safety Compliance
Follow electrical safety standards and SOPs.
Use PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) during work.
Ensure safe handling of live electrical connections.
6. Documentation & Reporting
Record installation details (meter number, consumer ID, GPS location).
Capture before/after installation photos.
Update job status using mobile apps or reporting tools.
7. Customer Interaction
Explain basic usage of smart meters to consumers.
Handle customer queries politely.
Take acknowledgment/signature after installation.
Required Skills
Basic knowledge of electrical systems and wiring
Ability to read single-line diagrams and meter connections
Familiarity with smart meter technology (AMI/AMR basics)
Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
Ability to use mobile apps for reporting
Good communication skills
Educational Qualification
ITI / Diploma in:
Electrician
Wireman
Electrical Engineering
Or related trade
Experience (Typical)
0–3 years (freshers can be trained)
Experience in electrical fieldwork or meter installation preferred
