Course Details

The course is intended to develop deep conceptual understanding and insight into data converter architectures. At the end of the course, the student should have clear cut understanding of data-converter specifications, architectural options and trade-off’s, design process and care-abouts. S/he should be above to design at an architectural level and model data-converters. S/he should be able to read and follow journal papers and conference proceedings. The course does not get into the design of the building blocks such as comparators and amplifiers. A separate course will be held for the same. Practising Analog designers will benefit, as also non-analog designers who are interested in getting an overview of analog in general and data-converters in particular. Engineering students in third year and above, who are interested in pursuing a career in Analog design, either in the industry or academia would find this a superb foundation. They would get a very good perspective of what it take for them to succeed. In general, it would aid to understand how the design approach works. A basic understanding of network theory (resistor, capacitor and inductance circuits),and signal processing (Fourier transforms – esp for sigma delta) is sufficient. All assignments will be in Octave, which is a free tool. Working knowledge of octave would be useful ... if not spend some time prior to the course getting familiar with it. Students can use their own alternatives such as Python or C++, if they are confident of the language/coding. Students need to get their own laptops.

Course Instructor: Suhas Kulhalli The instructor has over 22 years of experience in Analog design. Over his career, he has led Analog design teams in companies such as Texas Instrument, SiRF and Broadcom and has started and led teams for multiple start-ups. He still regularly consults start-ups on Analog circuits. He has obtained numerous US patents for his ideas, especially in the data converters and switched capacitor space. He has presented in the topmost international conference in this field and has led the first India based team to do so.
